Mars Needs Moms Poster
We’re going to a screening of Mars Needs Moms this coming weekend and I’m really looking forward to it. Fort those of you that haven’t seen the commercials, Mars Needs Moms is a Disney movie telling the story of how a nine year old boy comes to realize he loves and needs his Mom after she’s abducted by Martians.
Thinking about the synopsis of this movie got me to wondering what my kids would miss about me if I were abducted by aliens. Taking a guess, I think that these are the top five things my oldest son TJ would miss about me if I were abducted by Martians.

  1. My ability to drive a car. He can’t drive yet (he’s 15 so let’s not rush that) and we frequently pick up his girlfriend and drop her off. He’s not afraid of a little foot power but I’ve told him he’s not supposed to walk on the busy road that you have to take to her house.
  2. My sandwich making skills. After all, as my son is living proof, not everyone can put ham, cheese and mayo on two slices of bread.
  3. My ice cream purchasing and stocking skills. His father will not think to check if we’re almost out and won’t know when the good sales are going on in order to stock up.
  4. My laundry skills. His father can do laundry but it never seems to come out quite as good as when I do it.
  5. My appreciation for tech products. When TJ wants his cell phone upgraded or has a problem we discuss it and I take care of it. Hubby’s eyes can’t manage the tiny print and therefore doesn’t text. He obviously hasn’t figure out the secret – teenagers pay attention to texting.

Then I wondered what my youngest CJ would miss if I were abducted by Martians. The top five things I think he’d miss about me are:

  1. My gluten-free bagel locating skills. His Dad may be able to find them in the freezer but I know what stores carry the good ones.
  2. My poop patrol skills. I don’t know about your other half but my husband cannot clean up poop or vomit without gagging and wretching himself.
  3. My long nails. CJ loves it when I massage his hands and arms with my fingernails. Dad may be the fun one but I have long nails.
  4. My ability to hunt down all things Thomas the Train. This requires no further explanation.
  5. My television super powers, that is, my ability to sit through hours and hours on end of his favorite shows. Six hours of Thomas? Not a problem for me but Dad has had enough after about two.

After compiling my list I was a little sad. I thought of what I’d miss about them if I were abducted and somehow my list seemed a bit more substantial.
What would your kids miss about you if you were abducted by Martians? What would you miss about them?
