I love music. I always have my iPod with me. The only place I’ve ever truly wanted to use it that I couldn’t was while we were camping. That’s why I was really glad to receive the opportunity to review some portable multimedia speakers from iHome.

The iHome iHM77 portable multimedia speakers were one surprise after another, beginning with the moment I opened the box. I know it sounds cliche, but I thought it would be bigger. The whole speaker set fits in your hand.

The package contained two cylindrical speakers, a felt storage bag and a cable organizer that had two mini USB plugs, one standard USB plug and a standard 3.5mm headphone plug wrapped around it. The bottom of each speaker is magnetized so the two speakers stick together when storing.

The iHome iHM77 system runs on built in rechargable lithium ion batteries. To use the speakers you plug each of the mini USB plugs into the two speakers and then plug the 3.5mm headphone plug into your iPod. The larger standard USB cable will just sit off to the side, it is only to be used when charging the speakers. The speakers have an LED light that gives off a blue glow when the speakers are on.

Volume is controlled through the device as opposed to on the speakers. I was shocked at how loud these tiny speakers could actually get. I didn’t notice any change in sound quality until the iPod volume was maxxed out. Point of interest. These speakers feature a custom vacuum bass design for low frequency response and sound beyond size. Not being a great manual reader I didn’t know that when I first turned them on. The tiny speakers sounded terrific right out of the box and only got better once we learned that the top part of the speakers twists to allow expansion, making the sound chamber larger which permits a fuller bass sound. After trying these speakers out their tagline “sound beyond size” made perfect sense.

I love this product! Love it, love it, love it! I recommend it highly! They sound and perform better then I expected and hoped for. I like everything about these speakers so it’s hard to pick just one favorite feature. If I must do so it’s size. I love that they’re so small. We’ve never been pleased watching movies on my MacBook because the internal speakers don’t get very loud and the sound out of the laptop when watching the movie was not loud or clear enough. These are a perfect size for travel and use with laptops. Our family of four all sat in one room with the laptop and we were all able to clearly hear what was happening. If this is an indication of the quality of iHome products then I know which brand of clock radio I’m getting when i finally get the money together.
The iHome iHM77 Portable Multimedia Speakers are the perfect gift for anyone with an iPod or other mp3 player, iPhone, portable music device, portable DVD player or laptop. The speakers are available in black and red. They are available for purchase online at www.ihomeaudio.com and have a retail price of $49.99.
