One of the many gifts that we received from my parents around the time my oldest son was born was a dishwasher. We also received glass bottles, collars, caps, nipples, bottle brushes, and a bottle sterilizing pot. My parents knew from firsthand experience how the amount of things I had to wash and the frequency of which I washed them was going to increase. I totally understood how important it was to sterilize the baby bottles but I must say it was a giant pain in the butt. If you had to make a bottle shortly after sterilizing you burned your hand. If you didn’t you had to wonder where to put everything you’d just sterilized. After all, there isn’t much of a point in sterilizing things if you aren’t going to store them in a place that will keep them clean, is there?
Designed by Autumn and Ben Colayco, the UviCube is a countertop ultraviolet sanitizer that addresses those situations and many more. A report by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), found that ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is an established means of disinfection and can be used to prevent the spread of certain infectious diseases. The UviCube measures 12” wide x 14” deep x 15” tall, making it the perfect size for any countertop. To use the device you first wash the items you want to disinfect as you usually would. Then you make sure excess water is drained and place the items into the UviCube and press start. The cycle to dry and disinfect takes 45 minutes. If you’re disinfecting only and the items are already dry then the cycle takes only 10 minutes. When the UviCube is finished you can keep the disinfected items inside of it, rather then worrying about where to store something you’ve just disinfected.
The UviCube eliminates 99.9% of harmful bacteria with ultraviolet light. It will dry and disinfect all of the bottle-feeding items you worry about cleaning and storing. Things like baby bottles, caps, collars and nipples. Not only that, the device will also work for pacifiers, teething rings, sippy cups and feeding utensils. If you’ve ever burned your fingers boiling baby bottles to disinfect them then you’ll definitely appreciate the UviCube, which doesn’t use heat or steam so it can’t burn you.
Now you may think that if your child isn’t an infant anymore that the UviCube wouldn’t be useful to you. But it surely would! We all know that stuff happens. Kids can be taught the best of manners and sneeze into a tissue or their arm and yet still be exposed to germs. Consider things like smartphones, iPods, portable game systems, game system controllers, small toys and remote controls for televisions and stereos. Kids share them and enjoy them because they all bring lots of entertainment into our lives, but they can also bring germs. We as parents don’t sit around encouraging our children to get sick. Most of us hope they don’t and do what they can. The UviCube sanitizes these smaller items that can’t be washed and dried in a traditional manner, helping us as parents do what we can to keep our kids healthy.
I can see where a device such as the UviCube could be really beneficial. And I’m not the only one. The UviCube Kickstarter project reached its initial goal of $25,000 after only being live for a few days. This guarantees the unit will go into production. The folks at UviCube are hoping to start shipping the devices to backers as early as June 2015. Wanting to make this technology available to as many as possible the campaign remains open, with opportunities remaining to get one for yourself at the early bird rate, which is about $100 less then what the full retail price will be down the road. And if you have no children at all but feel as many do that there’s a need for this device in the market you can back the project simply by donating $1 or more. This will help keep the project visible and trending, increasing its awareness.

Moms have it so easy these days! When I my kids were babies, I had to sterilize with boiling water and tongs – up hill both ways! =D

Not only is this a great product – I absolutely love the way it looks. It wouldn’t ugly up a kitchen counter top. I don’t have babies anymore, but I could definitely see myself using this for electronics and things.

When I was cleaning baby bottles, I put them hot water with soap. I would have loved to have this sanitizer when my kids were babies.
Owie, my fingers hurt when you mentioned boiling water and baby bottles! No matter how careful I was, I always seemed to get a little burn when lifting them out. It was interesting reading about the UviCube.
What a great idea for new parents! When my daughter was a baby we boiled all of our bottles, I bet this would be much easier lol.
