TV PREMIERE – Rizzoli And Isles

I got a chance to review the premier episode of TNT’s new series Rizzoli & Isles, which debuts Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:00 P. M. (ET) and 9:00 P. M. (CT).

About Rizzoli And Isles – TNT adds two more powerful women to its slate of strong female characters with this exciting new drama series based on the crime novels by best-selling author Tess Gerritsen. Angie Harmon (Law & Order) and Sasha Alexander (Mission: Impossible III) star as Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, good friends and sometimes partners, who together solve crimes and bust some of Boston’s most notorious criminals. Jane and Maura grew up at opposite ends of the economic spectrum and still are opposites in many ways – Rizzoli is brash, uncompromising and better at basketball than her brothers, while Isles is always impeccably dressed in designer duds with a steady, sometimes icy temperament. Rizzoli and Isles often find themselves working together as both use their brilliant minds and expertise to figure out the “who done it” as well as the “how done it” of Boston’s most complex cases.
The series also stars Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) as Jane’s demanding and intrusive mother; Lee Thompson Young (FlashForward) as Det. Barry Frost, Jane’s somewhat green partner; Bruce McGill (Law Abiding Citizen) as Det. Vince Korsak, Jane’s seasoned former partner; Jordan Bridges (Dawson’s Creek) as Jane’s brother, Frankie, a patrol cop who hopes one day to become a detective; and Billy Burke (The Twilight Saga) as FBI agent Gabriel Dean.
RIZZOLI AND ISLES comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television and is being executive-produced by Janet Tamaro and Bill Haber’s Ostar Productions (TNT’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, TCM’s upcoming Moguls and Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood). Michael M. Robin (TNT’s The Closer) directed and executive-produced the pilot, which was written by Tamaro (Bones, Lost) and co-executive-produced by Jeff Hayes.

I’ve liked Angie Harmon since she was on Law & Order. I like her better in her role as Jane Rizzoli, because this role gives the viewers a chance to get to know her as a character, as well as Maura. They are both strong and yet so different. Even when Jane’s life is on the line she doesn’t appear weak. I had to laugh when Jane’s mother appeared at her apartment door to stay with her while the killer was on the loose and apparently targeting her. I liked the story writing in this first episode, it kept the plot moving. I found no slow points, it remained interesting. I’m curious to see if Jane and Maura find themselves interested in the same man (Agent Dean) during this season. And how will Jane’s brother’s young career at a police officer come into play? I’ve added Rizzoli And Isles to my DVR list so I don’t miss it.
