The story starts out with Donna as an animal lover who is expecting a child. Her husband Roy is a good-looking construction company owner, who doesn’t always understand where Donna is coming from, but clearly loves her so very much. I think it is this relationship which spoke to me so strongly and holds the film together.
Donna gets attacked when trying to help an abused dog and miscarries. The intense sadness of a couple facing a childless future breaks your heart. Andrea Powell from Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 & Enders Game plays Donna’s best friend Ramona. No matter what happens to Donna, husband Roy seems to find a way to blame the neighbor, even for the event when Ramona for all practical purposes saves his wife’s life.
We wish Roy’s emotional clockworks weren’t wound quite so tightly, but cheer when he realizes his error. Willette Thompson plays the owner of the animal shelter and has a number of great compassionate scenes in the film. Jon Provost who many will remember as a child actor as Timmy on the series “Lassie” does a nice job of being the politician on the side of Susie’s cause.
Susie’s Hope is on DVD and available on Amazon for $24.95 at the time of writing this post. It will be available in Walmart stores nationwide beginning January 5. This DVD is unrated.
