School starts next week in my area. In some areas of the country it’s already underway. Sadly, for some students the end of summer signifies not only the end of summer fun and a return to schoolwork, but also a return to a hostile environment where they are bullied by fellow students.
Back in the early 1980s when I was in high school I was verbally and emotionally bullied. As I’ve mentioned before, it wasn’t called bullying then. The worst of it was when I was at school. At home, even though I didn’t have many friends in my neighborhood, at least I knew I wasn’t being picked on. There were no computers back in those days. Now that computers are in our home, and on our cell phones, bullying no longer only takes place in person. Now it happens on the internet, including on social media sites like Facebook.
Recently a new app called Social Protection was introduced. The goal of Social Protection is to try to help parents be aware of what happens on Facebook so they can help try to ensure their child’s safety.

What does Social Protection monitor for?
Social Protection monitors Facebook for cyberbullying and other signs of violence, as well as depression, mentions of suicide, sexual activity and questionable photos. When Social Protection finds something it notifies the parents.
social protection curfew alert
Concerned that maybe your child will access Facebook after bedtime? Well, the program can even notify parents if Facebook is accessed outside of approved times during the day.
Through a combination of technology and cyber-tough love, SocialProtection scans and analyzes all Facebook content including language, photos, and content, to protect children from harmful situations. The site ONLY alerts a parent when questionable or dangerous content or photos are posted. It does not give access to the child’s entire existence on Facebook or restrict a child’s social life.
“We created this comprehensive platform to help parents protect children from the dangers associated with the fast-changing digital world.” said Justin Beegel, Co-Founder of SocialProtection. “We also have the opportunity for the kids to be alerted first when inappropriate photos are posted–to take them down before it goes to Mom & Dad. Giving the child responsibility and empowerment as well”.
Justin Beegel and his team, along with his dad Robert Beegel, developed SocialProtection.com over the course of two years with their own money so their vision of helping parents and protecting kids would be unobstructed. August 2014, embarks the Alpha launch of the innovative app.
“We wanted parents to have a set of tools to help them deal with the potential dangers presented by Facebook in today’s social landscape,” noted Robert Beegel. “Our mission, passion and focus are clear: make sure kids are safe and parents are informed and empowered.”
Here’s a brief video on how Social Protection came to be and what it’s about.

  1. Love the Social Protection features! Sounds like a great way to work with a child to decide on appropriate behavior. I especially appreciate the FB curfew idea. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Our kiddos are young, but it’s definitely something I think about and worry about for the future. We’ll definitely be setting limits and watching our little ones’ involvement online when they get older.

  3. Being a parent of a teen or young adult is really tough these days. I’ve never heard of anything like this. I hope it brings parents comfort & helps to protect their kids.

  4. This is a big step in the right direction in this age of tech-oriented children. I think this would be a useful tool for parents who cannot closely monitor all their children or who aren’t tech-savvy themselves.

  5. What a eat app! And I love that it was created by a parent who understands the things we worry about.
I love that I can be notified if FB is accessed after bedtime.. pretty nifty little funtion 🙂

  7. Lucky for me, my kids are both too young for the internet. When they do start logging on, I will definitely be very careful and protective! This sounds like a great tool.
