Our puppy Dobby loves his snacks and treats. One of the things he has enjoyed for some time is rawhide sticks. Prior to getting Dobby it had been quite some time since we had a dog. I hadn’t realized that while popular, there’s a lot of discussion about the potential health risks of rawhide.
Rawhide is made from the inner hide of a cow or other animal. The hide has to go through chemical processing in order to remove hair and any other materials. Then, it’s ground up or used whole in dog chews. I learned from the folks at SmartBones that many veterinarians are concerned with the potential health risks associated with dogs consuming rawhide. These health risks include stomach & intestinal blockage and potential ingestion of toxic chemicals used to process rawhide chews. In addition to potential health risks, there are also potential negative environmental issues generated by the use of chemicals in processing rawhide products.
I don’t like the idea of giving Dobby something that could hurt him but I don’t like the idea of not watching him enjoy a bone or treat either. So, the arrival of SmartBones® was very timely.
What are SmartBones®? I’d not heard of them until recently. PetMatrix designed these chews to be a safer alternative to rawhide chews. Wanting to be sure our furry family members to be safe, they made sure that SmartBones® chews are highly digestible and rawhide-free. We received samples of SmartBones® Beef Chews, Peanut Butter Stuffed Twistz, and Butcher’s Cut. Independent tests demonstrated that 9 out of 10 dogs prefer SmartBones® chews over the leading rawhide chews. But what did my Dobby think?
He loved them! He has thoroughly enjoyed each treat. I think he liked the beef chew and the Butcher’s Cut equally. His first beef treat was gone in less than 30 minutes. His first Butcher’s Cut lasted several hours. I can’t wait to see what he thinks of some of the other varieties, which I want to pick up this weekend. It’s easy for me to see how much he enjoys chewing on these. He seems to attack these with even more gusto than rawhide, which I am guessing is due to the scent and taste. He’s a very happy puppy. And I am very happy in knowing that his teeth can be cleaner and his can be engaged and busy with them without possibly endangering him.
