Sky Pony Press has some great new books that are aimed at boys. I got the chance to review several in exchange for my honest review. As soon as the books arrived, I called my friend, who has 3 school aged children. They are affectionately known as my “practice grandchildren,” because I have loved them since they were born just as if they were my own grandchildren! I now have a baby grand daughter, but she isn’t old enough to give me her opinion on books yet.
Faraway Friends

Landon, Aubrie, and Zion were excited to read the books and give me their opinion. The first book we read was called, Faraway Friends. This book is for ages 3 to 6 and retails for $16.99. It was written by debut author and illustrator, Russ Cox. Parents who identify with the free range parenting movement will especially like this story, but, I honestly think anyone will love it! It reminded me of my creative 6 children when they were little!
Aubrie was excited to read the story to her brothers. She thought it was definitely not just for boys! The story begins with a little boy named, Sheldon and his dog, Jet. Sheldon’s best friend moves away and he sees the words, “Jupiter” on the side of the moving truck. Sheldon decides to build a rocket ship and the story goes on from there. The kids loved this story and really loved how creative Sheldon was. Aubrie especially loved the twist at the end where you find out just how creative Sheldon has been!
Boys Camp: Zee’s Story

Next, Landon began reading, Boys Camp: Zee’s Story. This was written by Kitson Jazynka and Valerie Tripp and illustrated by Craig Orback. It retails for 14.99. Zee’s Story is a chapter book for young readers. Landon was very excited to begin reading this story because he is going to summer camp for the first time this year! In the beginning of the book there is a packing list for camp, which really gets the kids excited to keep reading. At the end of the book, there is a pocket with a fact card inside. On one side of the card there are kayak communication signals and the other side has safety gear you need for kayaking. I gave Landon the book to thank him for helping me with the review. He will have a great time reading this book!

The last book for review was for children ages 3 to 5 years of age. It is called, The Alphabet of Bugs: An ABC Book. It is written by Valerie Gates, an Emmy Award-winning art director and photographed by Ann Cutting, an award-winning conceptual photographer who has a BA in Biochemistry and cell biology and a BFA in photography.
The Alphabet of Bugs retails for $14.99 and has beautiful full-color photographs of bugs with names beginning from A to Z and a short description of each. This book really catches the eye and is extremely educational. I can’t wait to read it to my grand-daughter! It is a perfect book for either boys or girls. If you buy this for a child in your life, be prepared for them to amaze others with the knowledge they learn from it! How many other kids would say, “A is for Ailanthus Webworm Moth?”

These are great books! I always read books like this to the kids. They’re interesting, and they help the kids learn a little more about the world around them.
That Alphabet of Bugs book looks really cool. I bet my nephew would love it!
I can see the Alphabet of Bugs really a huge favorite around here. But I like think they would like them both.
I don’t know why but my 5 year old son is scared of bugs. I really need that bug book to show him there’s nothing to be afraid of. I love books and I do hope he continues to read where I left off!!!
These are such great books! They’re a great way to combine reading and a little earth science, too!
Faraway friends sounds like a solid bedtime read.
