I believe in supporting our military. If you’re a regular reader then you know my brother is in the Navy and was deployed for seven months last year. I have always felt that our servicemen and women deserve to make more money, and that we should do everything within our capabilities to support them. In many cases these people make less then you and I and yet have the same bills and financial responsibilities.
I became aware of the Sears Heroes At Home Wish Registry in December. When I first heard about it I thought it was a charity but when I took the time to read about it I learned it’s not. It’s a support program.
Sears created Heroes At Home as a way for us to help our military families get the items they want or need the most. The program begins with servicepeople registering at the site and listing the items they need the most or would most like to receive. Then, when people like you or I donate money to the Heroes At Home program, Sears gift cards are given to those servicepeople so that they can buy those items.
Heroes At Home isn’t a charity. It isn’t tax deductible. It’s not a handout. What it is is a gift. In the same way you give gifts to friends, colleagues and acquaintances, you can give a gift to someone who serves our country. I think it’s a great way for us to say thanks to the people that fight so hard for our country.
These servicemen and women have included all sorts of things in their lists. In many cases the items are for their families and children. I know what it’s like to want something for my children for Christmas (Wii Fit and PS3) and not be able to get it. It’s at times like this that I realize even when things aren’t going great for me that they’re even worse for others. I don’t ever wish to know what it’s like to need clothes for my children.

I never knew that about Sears. I did hear that they keep their employee’s jobs available for when they return from Active Duty.
It’s nice to hear about companies doing something for their employees and our fighting soldiers, instead of asking for bailout money!
