The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams is an animated journey in your dreams. It is always great to find a movie that the whole family can watch together without being embarrassed or having to explain any touchy situations.
This stop-motion animated film¹ is unique because of the stop-motion. It is within the tradition of “James and the Giant Peach”. This is now available on DVD from Shout! Kids.
The story is about a six-year-old boy whose name is Milo. He helps the Sandman rescue Dreamland. The main theme of this movie is courage and friendship.
You remember when you were little and the adults would say “oh the sandman came last night”. That was because ‘supposedly’ the sandman visited us to give us sweet dreams. The problem happens when the head of nightmares, Habumar starts causing problems for the Sandman. This leads to Dreamland being taken over and the problems only get worse. I am sure you will enjoy this movie just as much as I did.
¹Stop motion (also known as stop frame) is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object that appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using plasticine is called clay animation or “clay-mation”. I had a friend a while back that was an artist who did clay animation and filmed some of his work. It is an amazing process!
