I am writing this while on a flight to Atlanta. The sun is coming up and I have a spectacular view of it out the window to my left. I’ve got a cup of coffee and the itunes are going. I’m testing a new pair of Sol Republic headphones, following an unpleasant listening experience last week. A few minutes ago one of my favorite Hinder songs came on and i found myself singing along to myself. Next thing you know my head was nodding along like a bobblehead, my feet were tapping along and I was starting to dance in my seat. I had to giggle.
See, many years ago when I was in high school I took a trip to England. I worked hard doing my paper route and saved my money and paid for the entire trip myself. I was about 12. By this time in life I had already discovered the joys of music. When at home I could frequently be found blasting my stereo, dancing around the room and singing like young girls do. Knowing that the flight to England would be a long one, my parents packed me a nice set of earphones. At some point a song I liked came on and I sang to myself. The next thing I knew I was being tapped on the shoulder.
Miss, would you like something to eat? And could you could please stop singing, it doesn’t sound good.
Apparently my silent mouthing of the words hadn’t been so silent. I was so embarrassed. That was the day, the day the music died.
Since that day I will only sing when I’m home alone or in the car alone. I will also sing at a concert. Basically when I can turn the music up and envelope myself with it. I love to sing, it can be so freeing.
Stained has come on. This is it. I gently push the up volume button. I glance to my right, to be sure that I am not disturbing my neighbor on my right. All seems well.
I love the feeling of getting caught up in music I enjoy. I love to have the music in my head, with no other noise interfering. Last week I took a trip to Chicago. I couldn’t find my favorite ear buds and had to buy another pair for like $25. When I put them into my ears and turned on my music while in flight all I could hear was engines. The music sounded more like a muffled whisper than anything else. I was thoroughly disgusted and couldn’t enjoy my music or the movie I had on my iPad. How can you enjoy listening to anything – music, movie or podcast – when you’ve got all sorts of outside noise interfering? I mentally filed those under #wasteofmoney.
The Sol Republic Tracks headphones I am testing are actual over ear headphones as opposed to ear buds. I haven’t traveled with over ear headphones since that trip to England as they’re a bit large. In a sense for me this is a return to the scene of the crime. My trip to the SheStreams conference a few weeks ago inspired me to want to do a number of things differently, one of which is traveling lighter. These headphones can control the volume of an iPod, iPad and iPhone, and even have a ClearTalk microphone built in. I will say that I was surprised to find that for a pair of over the ear headphones, these earphones are extremely light. The sound is very full, most likely courtesy of the V8 Sound Engine Speakers that the headphones have. I like the feel of the cushion of the Sonicsft Speaker Pads over my ears better then ear buds. Plus, I believe the music just sounds louder. All in all the music sounds far better. I am completely thrilled with these Sol Republic headphones and would gladly recommend them to anyone looking for a decent set of headphones.
At this point a live Papa Roach song has come on and Jacoby is urging the crowd to sing it. I must resist…
