MY THOUGHTS
I received a copy of Mirror Mirror on Blu-ray. Being a fan of the original animated Snow White, I was both very skeptical and very curious about this movie. The costumes and scenery in this movie should almost be considered a supporting role in this movie. They are fantastic, they’re very colorful and blend with the plot and characters perfectly and help move the story along. Julia Roberts is fantastic as the Queen. she demonstrates her character early on, killing off the King. All the Queen cares about is power, money and her looks. Her beauty regime is a bit extreme, consisting of a bird poop facial and bees to sting her lips to make them fuller. Her magic mirror is very different from the mirror that we’re used to see hanging on a wall or on a stand. Lily Collins is wonderful as the lovely, nice girl Snow White. Snow White meets her Prince, but the Queen wants the Prince for herself – for financial reasons of course. Plus, the Queen thinks he’s attractive too. As we expect, the Queen wants Snow White gotten rid of because she is more beautiful than the Queen and makes the Queen feel threatened. Snow White escapes death by charming one of the Queen’s men and heads for the woods. In the woods, Snow White meets the seven dwarves. In Mirror Mirror the dwarves are basically outcast citizens that have turned into crooks trying to make a living in the tough economy the Queen has helped to create. When they go to work they don’t go the mines, they put on stilts and rob people. Snow White does more then look nice in this movie. she learns how to fight from the dwarves and then gets into the action by fighting the dragon that guards the woods. There’s a good amount of humor in this movie. The movie is amusing. while probably not best suited for young children as it isn’t animated and is written more for older viewers, I’d say the movie was most appropriate for tweens and older.
