Its Up To Me To Be Drug Free
This year, The National Family Partnership and Informed Families present a first-ever, national contest: students can win an iPad2 and $1,000 for their schools.
This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is IT’S UP TO ME TO BE DRUG FREE.
The Red Ribbon contest launches September 30th and continues through October.
Red Ribbon Week History
The National Family Partnership (NFP) organized the first nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988, and since that time has reached millions of U.S. children and families.
NFP and its network of individuals, schools, law enforcement agencies and organizations continue to deliver this message of hope to more than 80 million of people every year, through Red Ribbon Week (October 23-31), the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign.
In 1985, Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico.
In honor of Camarena’s memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin.
Parents – sick of the destruction of alcohol and other drugs – began forming coalitions. Some of these new coalitions took Camarena as their model and embraced his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions also adopted the symbol of Camarena’s memory, the red ribbon.
Online resources to help track your progress and stay clean and sober are available as well.
