I am an ambassador for Lake Placid’s Come Play in the Snow Campaign. Please note that, as always, any personal opinions reflected in this post are my own and have not been influenced in any way.

I used to swim competitively. In the late 70s, 1979 I think it was, I had the amazing experience of traveling to Quebec, Canada and swimming in the Olympic pool. That was one of the first times that I truly understood that a place could be much more then just a destination or place to go. A place can actually be a lifestyle or frame of mind. Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, is one of those places.
Lake Placid is in New York state. Tucked amongst the Adirondack mountains, this small village is home not only to history, but also to all of the beauty and fun that you would expect to find in one perfect day. Right now is the time of year when Lake Placid shines. It is one of the country’s ideal winter travel destinations because there is just so much to do there. It is a place where you can have a perfect day. Before you know what you can do on a perfect day in Lake Placid you need to know some things about Lake Placid. These are facts that make Lake Placid a perfect place to have a perfect day.

Approximately 137,000 people live in the Adirondacks twelve months of the year. In addition, there are 200,000 seasonal residents. Considering the size of the region that’s actually not that many residents in my opinion. What the area doesn’t have in residents it gets in visitors. The Adirondacks welcome an estimated 7-10 million visitors to the region annually. That’s a pretty good amount, considering 60 million people live within a day’s drive of the Adirondack region. The region offers over 11,000 rental rooms in hotels, motels, inns and cottages, along with almost 12,000 campsites.
The Adirondack Park contains 85% of all wilderness in the eastern United States, and is the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. That’s right, the Adirondacks are actually a park. The New York State Legislature created the Adirondack Park in 1882 by enacting measures that guaranteed public lands would remain “forever wild” – the strongest such law in the United States. The nonstop juxtaposition of mountains and water is one of the things that makes the region so unique. The western and southern Adirondack area is a gentle landscape of hills, lakes, ponds and streams, along with the highest mountains in the state. The 46 High Peaks (over 4,000 feet)include Mount Marcy, the highest point in New York at 5,344 feet. Within the park are 3,000 lakes and ponds and more than 1,200 miles of rivers fed by an estimated 30,000 miles of brooks and streams. There are over 100 villages and towns within the park but no cities. It is the largest area without a city in the state.

Doesn’t that sound like the perfect place to have a perfect day? I think so. There’s so much beauty in nature. And there’s a lot more to do there besides admire the beauty! Be sure to check back again this coming week, when I share some of the exciting activities that are available in Lake Placid!
