nothing to do
If you have children, teens specifically, you may be familiar with this conversation.
“What did you guys do?”
“Nothing.”
This is not an uncommon answer I get when asking my son what he did when spending time with friends. If I really push the answer might expand to “chill” or “hang out”. If I shove I might get “listened to music” or “played video games.”
I don’t love the answer “nothing” but can relate. I remember being a teen and recall giving similar answers. It wasn’t so much that I had in fact done anything wrong or not, or had anything to hide, but rather liked the feeling of being my own person able to make decisions. An age where the ability to make a choice to do the littlest thing was  bg deal.
So now here we are on a little family getaway. My sixteen year isn’t thrilled to be here. When asked why he said its because there’s nothing to do up here in the middle of nowhere and he’d rather be home. When asked what he’d do if he were at one, his answer was nothing.
So when does nothing mean nothing and nothing mean something? Does your teen ever do nothing?
