Mystic Aquarium, Mystic CT
On my drive home from Boston I decided to stop in Mystic, CT. I’d driven by many times over the years and had always wanted to go to the Mystic Aquarium. It was overcast and raining on and off when I got to the Aquarium. I worried I’d be outside getting drenched but as it turns out while not perfect you can easily enjoy the aquarium on a rainy day, many things are indoors and there is shelter here and there.
Mystic Aquarium is set up with several different large areas. After you enter the park you can basically go in one of two directions, and each area leads to another. There were employees located in each area that were happy to answer questions from park visitors.
The first exhibit I stopped at was the stingray touch pool. The stingrays are so graceful when they swim.
The restrooms and a food stand are also near here. A lot of ducks gather in this area, so don’t be surprised to find one right near your feet or approaching your table for lunch.
Then it was off to the Arctic Coast exhibit to see the Beluga Whales. They are so fascinating, cute, and so very fun! I actually had to return again later to see them again.

After that I headed to the Pacific Northwest exhibit, which features Harbor seals, fur seals and sea lions. The seals were very cute. There is one seal that has a permanent home there, because it had to have a flipper amputated due to an infection and that would make it to weak to live in the wild.
Next up was the Penguin Pavillion. I don’t know about you but I think penguins are just so cute and very amusing. I happened to visit that exhibit at feeding time. Penguins eat until they’re full, unlike some animals that just keep eating. Every fish that each penguin takes is carefully recorded, so that the staff is right on top of who’s eating what, which helps them know when there are potential issues.

I then took the Marsh Trek, which gave me the opportunity to see a bunch of frogs! The seasonal Birds Of The Outback exhibit is located in this area. Somehow I missed that and didn’t even realize it until I’d gotten home. The Marsh Trek led me to the Main Gallery, which is where you can see different sharks, rays, fish, eels, barracuda, lobster, crab and more. No doubt this is the most colorful area of the aquarium, the colors of some of the fish is just beautiful.

On my way out of the park I stopped at the Titanic Exhibit. Here visitors learn more about the ship and icebergs.
I took a ton of pictures at the aquarium, here’s a slideshow containing 20 of my favorites.

And if you don’t have time to watch the slideshow now, pin the sand sculpture below and come back at your convenience.

  1. We have admission to the aquarium by our house, but there’s mostly smaller fish with a few small sharks. My kids would absolutely freak to see the whales up close. THat looks like a great aquarium.

  2. Wow, what a beautiful aquarium. I’ve never been to CT and have wanted to visit for a long time. I can’t believe how affordable it is. The one down by us is about 2x as expensive!

  3. That looks like a really nice aquarium. We love to go to places like this one. The Beluga Whale picture is amazingly cute, and the slideshow pictures are awesome.
