I have had a love-hate relationship with pillows for years. I love them because when they’re working right my head is comfy and it helps me to get good rest. I hate them because they’re fickle. I don’t think it’s right to spend anywhere from $10-$35 on a pillow and then have it be flat and useless within a relatively short time. They lure you in by looking and feeling nice and fluffy and full, but then trick you by going flat within weeks if not days. Those deceiving pillows are a pain in the neck, literally! There have been so many times where I woke up sore or in pain simply because of the pillows. As such, I was quite intrigued to learn about the Mediflow Waterbase Pillow and try it out for myself.
The Mediflow Waterbase Pillow measures 20: x 28″ and fits in a standard or queen pillow case. The outside of the pillow is a soft layer of resilient hypoallergenic Dacron Hollofil fiber. The inner chamber of the pillow can be filled with water to adjust to the level of support you prefer – soft, medium or firm. There is an insulating layer between the fiber layer and the water compartment to prevent heat loss. The pillow’s waterbase adjusts to the movements your head makes while you sleep in order to maintain support for your neck. The Mediflow Waterbase Pillow was clinically proven best in a Johns Hopkins study to improve sleep and reduce neck pain. The study found that subjects fell asleep more quickly and stayed asleep longer when using the Mediflow Waterbase pillow as compared to other pillows.

The Mediflow Waterbase Pillow is easy to fill. To fill the pillow you attach the included funnel to the valve to the water compartment. A chart is included to help you know how much water to add. The compartment can hold from 2 to 5 quarts of water, depending on the level of firmness you desire. After adding the water you screw the cap onto the valve. It is recommended that you “smooth” the pillow as and after you add the water in order to remove as much air as possible, in order to help prevent noisy sloshing when you’re using it. It is also recommended that you change the water once a year.

I need to begin by saying that we have a king size bed. We both prefer pillows from one side to the other. So unfortunately, two of these pillows is just not sufficient for our bed. I needed two of these pillows alone just for my side of the bed. I like big, firm pillows so when I first opened the pillow I added the full 5 quarts. It seemed fairly solid and didn’t make much sloshing. When I went to lay on it I discovered I wished it had even a little more water. I didn’t add any more though because I didn’t want to overfill it and risk it leaking or breaking. The pillow seemed to remain as is for about 3 months. I recently reached that 3 month mark and noticed that the pillow did seem to be a little “flatter” or lower and I noticed a little annoying sloshing noise. At this point I would typically start contemplating buying new pillows. Instead I simply found the funnel and added some more water back in. The only downside I have noticed to the pillow is that where the funnel attaches is not completely recessed in the pillow. As a result I can feel the rim of the valve through the pillow case most of the time. That annoyed me to a point where I started sleeping with a second pillow case on the pillow, which seemed to help.
A final note of interest. The Mediflow Waterbase Pillow can be machine washed and dried.
Here’s a brief video explaining the technology used in the pillow a bit more clearly.
Mediflow Waterbase Pillows are available to purchase on the Mediflow website, as well as from retailers such as Amazon, Walgreens, Overstock and Bed, Bath & Beyond. The pillow comes warranty for one year against defects and 30 days for satisfaction.

I hate when my pillow gets hot. It sounds odd, but when it heats up from my head laying on it I become very uncomfortable and toss and turn a lot.
My current pillow is a memory foam/gel pillow but it is too stiff! I have yet to find the “perfect pillow” and I’m beginning to think they dont exist.
I love my down alternative pillow, but I’m always looking for something new to try.
I hate when all the stuffing shifts and one side looses it all. I also dislike a hot pillow. My mom used to put hers on the porch every night during the winter months so it could get nice and cold before she would go to sleep. I am so tempted to start doing it!
I have a small neck curve and need a low pillow. Too squishy and I have nerve pain, too hard and they hurt my ear. Finally found the perfect pillow…..and then woke up with clogged ears and sinus infections. Turns out I’m allergic to latex and the memory foam that seems to be in all pillows these days is made of latex! I hate that so many pillows are full of chemicals or the popular memory foam. I hate that the only adjustable ones seem to have the memory foam or are huge. I’m tired of being 38 years old and sleeping on a pillow pet, the only pillow that seems to be the right size.
I hate how flat my pillows are! It’s definitely time to upgrade!
I think all pillows get hot. It would be nice to find one thats stays cool.
I hate when my pillows get so flat… I have to sleep with 5 pillows, just so i can get the right kind of support… Also, i hate that my body temperature makes them the same temperature… Waking up in the middle of the night just to flip and ajust my pillows so i can get back to sleep…
There’s no better match for a hot sweaty head then a nice cool pillow. Anything that is going to improve the quality of my sleep is something I would like to own. If I had better quality sleep, I would be sleeping now instead of writing this. Here’s hoping something good comes out of today’s insomnia!
I hate when my pillow stuffing goes flat and the pillow becomes hot. I have tried to find a combination of allergy free and soft for my husband and cool and firm for me. The current set I found has not lived up to its promise for the extra money spent.
I hate it how when I get a new pillow, and in no time it gets flat! This pillow looks cool because when it starts going flat, I can fill with water!! Amazing!
It gets hot – very uncomfortable.
Old foam ones were too hard and unwieldy. Just bought new ones–too soon to say.
My husband bought us expensive memory foam pillows for Christmas. They are too hard. I have even put a soft, smooshy pillow on top of it and I still wake up every day with neck pain.
Should I admit that my favorite pillow was originally purchased in 1986? It’s a very dense foam and is still very firm. I actually sleep with two pillows and this one is the bottom pillow. I’ve tried a variety of pillows over the years….remember the one with the buckwheat hulls (ending up using it as the dog’s bed)…but haven’t found one that checks all the blocks.
I hate when my pillows get flat so quickly keep me from good night sleep;-(
My pillow gets all bunched up..lol. NOT very comfortable at all. And it makes my neck hurt.
I have about a dozen pillows on my bed and its still hard for me to get a good night’s sleep. Ugh!
My current pillow is old, lumpy, and too soft. I end up stacking pillows then rotating them through the night to try and get comfortable.
My pillow is memory foam and for the most part it’s pretty good, but sometimes it still seems a bit high. I’m interested in seeing the difference of a water based pillow
My current pillows are goose down are are over 10 years old very flat and uncomfortable
I have lupus and I wish I could adjust my current pillows to how I am feeling and what my pain level needs are… Softer firmer. Etc
I hate that my current pillow exploded two nights ago. The fabric holding in the stuffing just ripped right down the middle. Stuffing bits all over my bed, ggrrrrr. So, my list for the weekend now includes buying a new pillow. Double ggggrrrrr.
It’s flat or it’s too thick, I can never seem to get it just right and it’s lumpy too.
we have feather pillows that are old and flat
I hate how lumpy and uncomfortable my current pillow is!
I hate that one is way to soft and the other one is getting flatter and flatter. They don’t support my neck at all and I wake up with a sore neck and shoulders.
I hate my pillow because it does not mold to neck and it is really hot! It is not firm enough to support my neck fully.
My pillow gets flat easily
I hate how the filling in my pillows shifts easily and creates lumps after only a short time.
I love my feather pillow, but my husband is allergic to it. I need to find something else that is still comfortable, keeps me cool and yet safe for my husband.
I hate that my current pillow is so flat!
My husband and I both have our favorite pillows. Lately we wake up and our necks and shoulder hurt. I know we need new pillows but its so hard to find the balance of one that soft but not too fluffy!
I have two pillows, but I don’t think they offer enough support because I wake up most mornings with a sore neck lately.
My current pillow sinks in on the side I’m using so I often have to turn it to keep it even.
My current pillows just don’t give my neck enough support.
I hate that my pillow is too flat. I am having to use 2 pillows just to keep it the size of one. Buying pillows at Walmart for $2.50 is probably not the greatest idea.
I’m a side sleeper and I cant find a pillow that fits me
i hate when it gets hot and i hate over soft pillow it drives me nuts
I have a feather pillow that I sleep on & I love it because it is so, so soft!
