I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. I think a resolution to try something to improve yourself or a situation can be made at any time of the year. Since I’ve been out of work for some time, and hubby isn’t working full time, we’re doing all that we can do really tighten our belts so that we can cut costs and save some money.
For those of you with credit cards, one alternative for you is to consolidate your debts. A lot of people think that debt consolidation is a loan. It s not. Debt consolidation is when you combine all of your current unsecured debts and add them together, resulting in one monthly payment. One of the big positives here is that you’ll likely end up with better terms and lower interest rates. We ourselves don’t have any credit cards or loans, so we have to find other ways to cut costs.
One of the most efficient ways that I have saved money is by not carrying cash. I only carry my debit card, which forces me to make better budgeting decisions. By doing this I have to really think about each purchase and if I need to make it, whereas I never really put a lot of thought into cash purchases. There’s something very sobering about looking at your checking account ledger, seeing a limited amount of money there, and knowing you must make it last by spending wisely.
Another way that we’ve saved money is by doing smarter grocery shopping. Last year we bought a used, upright freezer. Now I can buy meats in bulk, and use it over time. I can take advantage of sales on frozen goods that we use a lot and stock up on those things. I buy most items when they’re on sale, and use a coupon for all items whenever possible.
Another thing that you can do to cut costs is by living more efficiently. We turn off the lights whenever we’re not going to be in the room for a while. We wash as much as possible on cold. We only run the clothes washer when we have a full load, same thing with the dishes. We turn off the water while brushing our teeth. We have an automatic thermostat, which lowers the temperature while we’re sleeping and when we’re not home.
Last but not least, be sure to check your regular bills such as telephone and television. Ask those providers if there is a plan that suits your usage habits better. Sometimes they’ll have a new plan you weren’t aware of. Sometimes they’ll offer you a credit as a valued customer reward.
In short, there’s no one right way to save money. But, many simple changes add up. What are your favorite money saving tips?

My system is pay all bills due, put aside money for food, then budget the rest into gas, etc, hide one big bill (hate breaking them), and leave the plastic at home.
