REVIEW – GhostBed Mattress – Supernatural Comfort In An Effortless Purchase

When is the last time you thought about getting a new mattress? I’ve thought about it fairly often since 1984, when I moved out on my own. With the exception of a $35 waterbed mattress, I have never had a brand new mattress since entering adulthood. At first I didn’t think too much about it. We didn’t have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out of, as the saying goes. So, we slept on second and third-hand mattresses, those given to us after folks we knew got new mattresses of their own. It’s recommended that you replace most traditional mattresses every 7 years. We were only getting our mattresses at the 6-7 year mark. Our most recent mattress was one that we got from my parents when they got a new one. The mattress was already a good 7 years old or so when we got it and we used it for a good 6-7 years more. When the mattress started to really sag we turned it over. The next attempt to fix the problem was placing egg crate on top of the mattress. The final temporary solution was placing a foam topper on  top of the egg crate that was on top of the mattress. About nine months ago I started waking up sore, my first clue to the fact that the mattress had had its day and the time had come to replace it.
Purchasing a new mattress. It’s always seemed to be quite a bit of a process to me. While I haven’t ever purchased a new one on my own, I do know plenty of people that have. You have to decide what you are going to buy. How do you decide – research, trying it out, flipping a coin? You certainly don’t want to be stuck with something you hate. And, what if you do wind up with something you don’t like. Then what? Things like mattresses are actually pretty personal and not easily returnable. And last but far from least, you have to coordinate delivery, which always sounds easier than it actually is.
The idea of going to the store to buy most things anymore quite simply exhausts me. Hubby and I are on completely different schedules, making doing anything together challenging.  If we did somehow manage to get to a store to look at mattresses, then what? How does a person truly get comfortable on a bed they know a few hundred people have been on. Ew. And, it isn’t like you can settle in and watch tv or take a nap. You spend 5 minutes sitting on a bed with a salesperson hovering over you and you’re supposed to be confident you’ve made the best decision? So. About the mattress. The GhostBed mattress is composed of three different high quality materials, combined to offer maximum support, comfort and durability. Made in the USA, the three layers that make up this mattress are:

• 1½” Continuous aerated latex foam is naturally responsive, plush and does not retain heat
• 2″ Gel memory foam uses a proprietary formula with larger cells to make it more reactive to the body for cooler nights
• 7½” High density base layer for increased support and longevity

Then , the mattress is topped with a soft and flexible cover. The CertiPUR-US certified cover is made of a blend of viscose and polyester for stretchability. It’s been designed and handcrafted for durability and zips off for easy spot cleaning.
Once your order has been placed, your mattress (and foundation if you ordered one) will ship for free via FedEx from one of eight national distribution centers within 24 hours. Once your order ships you receive a tracking number so you can stalk know where your mattress is.

I chose to go with a king size bed, and the foundation as well. My bed took two days to arrive. FedEx brought the two very large and heavy boxes up to my door, just as they do every other package that they deliver to my home. I was able to pull the boxes into the house on my own, but do recommend you have someone help you out. It’s a lot simpler, and you won’t strain your back.

The foundation takes a little bit of time to put together, as there are 60 screws that have to be put into place to hold the wood pieces and slats together. Most of the holes for the screws are predrilled, but it’s a good idea to be cautious when putting the foundation together so you don’t overtighten the screws and split the wood.

We got the king size foundation. In the photo above, the mattress looks almost like one of those comforters or bed in a bag sets you can buy.

So you get a clear idea of size, this is the wrapped mattress next to my arm. My palm was flat on the foundation.

Once you remove the outer plastic wrap the mattress starts to unfold and expand.

The mattress relaxes fairly quickly as you open up the plastic wrapping. I’d originally thought a dramatic unboxing video would be fun, but to be truthful the mattress goes from rolled up to completely open in a matter of two minutes or so and I didn’t have the opportunity to shoot video.

Once the mattress is out of the package, it takes a little time – up to a full day – for the mattress to fully expand and acclimate to the room temperature. You can sleep on it during that time if you like. I was patient and able to wait. Jules, our cat, was not.

The GhostBed mattress is named so because it promises supernatural comfort. I have found the mattress to be very comfortable. It’s actually firmer than I expected. I think somewhere in my mind I expected to sink into the mattress and have it envelop and surround me, much like when you receive an item packed in that soft, cheap foam wrap that some people use when sending things in the mail. But that’s not how it is. The mattress is actually really solid. My oldest decided to try leaping onto it and was shocked to find that it didn’t move much at all.  The firmness of the GhostBed was a bit of an adjustment for me. It grew to be more comfortable to me each night for the first three nights. I don’t miss having a big gully in my bed and am no longer waking up sore. I was a bit surprised to find that the GhostBed doesn’t get super hot like I expected it might. It’s ability to remain cool is a must for those that like to stay cool while they’re sleeping.
