“A baby bear cub named Maurice is curious about spring—and he’s upset when Mama tells him that before he can experience his first spring, he has to hibernate through his first winter! Mischievous Maurice decides to leave their warm den and go find spring for himself. He asks all his friends for help . . . and finally finds something beautiful and full of magic and light. Spring! He wraps it up and takes it home, determined to show Mama and everyone else. The only problem? When Maurice wakes up, his little piece of spring (a snowball) has melted. This gloriously illustrated book celebrates friendship, curiosity, discovery, and the meaning and beauty of two seasons—winter and spring. Ideal for the classroom, seasonal story times, and bedtime reading.”
It has been one long, cold, winter! It seems like it snows almost every day here! Spring is about a month away…and I cannot wait! In Finding Spring we join a little bear named Maurice as he searches for spring. Little Maurice is curious about spring. He has never experienced it before so has no idea what it is like. His mama explains to him that first he must sleep through winter. I wish I could hibernate through winter! Impatient as most young children are, he sets off to find spring for himself. Maurice has not yet experienced spring, so he is not sure what to look for. He comes across some friends in the forest who are getting ready for winter. As the first snow begins to fall, Maurice thinks he has discovered spring. He gathers some to take back home. My little one giggled and said “ That’s snow! That means winter not spring!” Eventually Maurice falls asleep and when he wake up he finally discovers spring.
Finding Spring children's book
The illustrations in Finding Spring are something I personally have not seen before. She uses cut paper collages for the pictures. Using old books, receipts, ticket stubs, and old catalogues, she makes the beautiful pictures you see in this book. I cannot even imagine how much time and effort goes into that! My son noticed some of the words on the pictures from the old books or whatever she had used. I explained to him why it was there and his response- “WOW” Finding Spring is a wonderful book to teach about the seasons and how the animals prepare for winter.

What is your favorite season?
