Do you have pets? If you do then you might be suffering from noseblindness. That’s right. If you have a furry family member as I do then noseblindness is a real possibility.
If you’ve never heard of noseblindness, I assure you it’s real. Over time people get used to the odors around them. Smokers don’t smell the smoke, which is part of the reason so many things smell and taste better after they quit smoking. And unfortunately, pet owners don’t always smell the odors pets leave behind. Even more unfortunately, their guests usually do. In fact, a 2014 global survey from Atomik Research indicated that 49 percent of Americans say that they dread visiting homes with pets because of the smell. Uh oh! And that’s not the only statistic that’s a bummer. 48 percent of Americans say that they could make out someone’s home simply by the odor alone, particularly if that person has a pet. 24 percent of Americans feel that pet smells are the most offensive within in a home (second only to the scent of garbage and coming in above the scent of smoke).
I have experienced noseblindness myself, on at least several occasions that I know of. When we got rid of an old couch last year we couldn’t believe how much better the room smelled. Once we got rid of carpeting. We didn’t know how bad it smelled until we got it out the front door. Once outside the smell nearly knocked us over. A smell doesn’t always mean your pets are doing bad things. Animal scent. It can smell. Even if an animal isn’t destructively marking territory they leave a scent. Cats rub scent glands on people and things to say “these are mine.” The cat box? It smells. Wet dogs? They smell. Dirty dogs? They smell. Your furniture? It smells.
Noseblindness occurs in one of two ways – odor adaptation and odor habituation. Odor adaptation is a decrease in ability to sense odors subsequent to initial exposure. Odor habituation is when you get used to the odors in your everyday life. Understanding what noseblindness is is great, knowing how to prevent it is even better. After all, noseblindness isn’t something that should keep people from adopting pets, nor should it keep guests from coming over to visit. Interesting bit of info. When it comes to their own pet’s smells, the majority of people surveyed (60 percent) said that they would hate it if they thought their guests were thinking their homes smelled of animals.
Now if you have pets no doubt you would want to be sure that whatever you use to deal with noseblindness is safe for pets. In order to use the logo of the ASPCA, the nation’s leading voice for animals, on product packaging the product’s ingredients must be reviewed by the ASPCA and be deemed to be non-toxic to animals when used as directed. Stinkface. I’ve never heard that one before. I’m thinking that febreeze is something I need to get for my place. Mostly because sometimes my kitty tends to leave stray smells from her box. What a cute dog too!
I got to try the Febreze Hepa Filter and I LOVE it, I don’t know how I lived without one for so long, we are a Febreze Household for sure but the Hepa filter is the business! 🙂
I wish I could still use Febreze, but the chemicals they put in it caused my boxer to have a severe allergic reaction that required an emergency trip to the vet. I always loved their lavender scent.

I’m definitely not noseblind when it comes to my dogs. We do regular baths and washings of their bedding but Febreze is great for rainy days when wet dog smell is too much to handle
