ABOUT BUTTER
In Iowa, butter carving is as cut-throat as a Presidential election, plagued with scandal, greed, blackmail, and sex – except with butter! When long-reigning champion butter sculptor, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), is forced to step down, his zealous wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner), enters the competition herself to fight fortheir status as butter royalty. A win seems virtually guaranteed for the poised and studied candidate when a formidable contender emerges: the fresh-faced, effortlessly charismatic 10-year-old, Destiny (Yara Shahidi), an African-American foster child of local couple, Jill and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry). Suddenly, it’s anybody’s game and Laura will do anything to win – even if it means resorting to sabotage and seducing her foolish ex-boyfriend, Boyd (Hugh Jackman), as a co-conspirator.

I received a copy of Butter. You’re familiar with ice carving, right? Well, Butter is a movie about butter carving. In this movie, butter is a cut-throat sport, or at least that’s what it turns into when Laura Pickler gets involved. Laura’s husband Rob has won the title of butter carving champion for many years. When it is “suggested” by officials that he step down in order to give other people a chance, Laura gets very upset and decides to enter herself. Rob had become involved with a hooker and owes her money. When she realizes that Rob isn’t going to pay her, she enters the competition as well. During all this time, a young girl Destiny is being shuffled from foster home to foster home. When she gets taken in by Ethan and Jill, her talent for carving butter blossoms. With their support, she enters the contest as well. Laura discovers she is not the only one with talent, and Destiny wins. Laura challenges to a rematch at the state fair. Fearing a loss to Destiny, Laura takes matters into her own hands. Not only does she not fight fair, you could say she fights dirty. She reconnects with an ex-boyfriend who is still very attracted to her. He is very appreciative of her sexual favors and also tries to manipulate situations so that Laura will win. Everyone in attendance at the state fair packs into the hall to watch the final showdown and see who is crowned champion. I found this movie to be really funny, much edgier then I expected. I recommend it highly, but must note that this is definitely not a movie for young children.
