I got my first checking account when I was seventeen years old. Back then you didn’t have to worry about how much it cost to have a checking account. Checking accounts were free. There were no debit cards back then, so everything was done by check. Basically, it’s the complete opposite of how things are today. Today things are done online, or with a debit card. Back in the old days I probably wrote anywhere from twenty to fifty checks per month. Today I write maybe two checks per month, tops. And that would be a lot.
When I recently changed banks and opened a new account I was asked if I wanted to order checks. The prices were crazy so I said no. I couldn’t justify spending $20 or $30 that I’d hardly ever use. I would like to have a box of checks handy though. They’re great for mailing, especially since I won’t mail debit card information. They’re their own receipt. I frequently see offers for cheap checks in the weekly coupon flyer. The bank’s checks are pretty plain and ordinary. The checks I see in the weekly flyers are always colorful. Some of them are really cute, like the cats that I’m so partial to. I’m thinking about ordering a box to keep on hand just in case.
Do you use checks any more?

My bank recently changed our bank account numbers due to the hacking of all of our tax documents so all the checks I have are useless now and I’m not really sure I should obtain anymore due to the fact that I don’t really use them. I might have used one once a month to pay my rent if I couldn’t get to the bank but it’s not that big of a deal to do that.
I do not want unfixed automatic debits (i. e. utilities and other bills that fluctuate) on my account. I pay by phone at times and hubby pays online mostly. I use my card at a few stores. However, I do not like to carry much cash–having money tempts me to spend it so I carry a few checks for situations like the doctor who takes only cash and checks but no cards whatsoever.
not in a loooong time. like you said, it’s a cmpletely waist of money for someone that earns an average income
