I didn’t really know what I’d think of this movie. I adore Disney’s animated movies. But this clearly isn’t one of those. This is a drama. This is the story behind a story. This is how the movie Mary Poppins got made. Saving Mr Banks is the tru story of how Walt Disney convinced the creator of Mary Poppins, author PL Travers, to let him make a movie featuring Mary Poppins.Travers is very attached to the Mary Poppins characer, who was created twenty some years before in one of her books. She is in such bad financial shape that after twenty years of being asked, she finally has to seriously consider Walt Disney’s proposal to turn Mary Poppins into a movie. The movie moves back and forth between Travers childhood (early 1900s) and the weeks she spent in Los Angeles (early 1960s) for scripting and pre-production decisions. She is just bitter and unhappy, and seems content to remain that way. But as the movie progresses her memories of childhood show us why she is that way. The whole story is very powerful. Quite frankly, if you’re looking for sunshine and rainbows and happy stuff like that you won’t find it here. Saving Mr Banks is a sad story, but in a good way, in the way we learn about the people and the movie they finally were able to make together. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are absolutely amazing in their roles as Walt Disney and PL Travers. Serious adult topics are shown, as such young children will likely not understand or enjoy the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I totally recommend the movie. But I did have tears in my eyes on more then one occasion.
PS. There are some songs that always stick in your head. You can think you won’t like them but you can’t help but to like them. Let’s Go Fly A Kite is one of those songs. If it doesn’t get you during the movie, be sure not to miss the bonus footage where the cast and crew sing it on the last day of filming.

We haven’t seen this yet but I’ve heard great things about it.
From the clips I’ve seen, it really does look good. I think I’m going to break down and watch it.
I have this & have been wanting to watch it SO bad- I’m thinking family movie night this weekend. I love all things Disney so to get a look at how Mary Poppins came to be is so exciting to me, thought I’m sure it’s probably a bit dramatic from what I’ve heard!

I really wanted to see this one. I’d like to know more about controversial Song of the South. I remember seeing it before I entered school and how it instilled in me a sense of injustice and reality that it is the inside not the outside that makes people good or bad, cruel or kind.
