About the author: Cheryl McNeil Fisher has a bachelor’s degree in counseling from SUNY and attended the divinity program at Bethel University. For the past twenty years, she has been speaking throughout the United States about blindness and how her guide dog has transformed her life, even appearing on Martha Stewart’s radio program. She lives in Shawangunk, New York.
Author Cheryl McNeil Fisher often meets children who ask her about her constant companion, Sanka, her devoted guide dog. She decided that she wanted to help young children understand how Sanka supports and helps her in her often challenging day-to-day life. The educational and touching book is very cleverly written through the eyes of Sammy the guide dog, a retriever. It goes through all the things on their trip to the mall and daily life what Sammy does for Cindy, who is legally blind. It also describes the challenges that Sammy goes through, such as trying not to sniff a toy and fighting the desire to be pet (which he can’t be because hes working). This is a great book and could really help children understand guide dogs and little bit about the people they help.

Had one once. Age or grade recommendations?

I’ve met a few people with service dogs. It’s amazing the work that these dogs do. There are dogs that do everything from guide the blind to help with everyday tasks for those with muscular distrophy.
No, I have never met anyone with a guide dog. I have seen them though and think its great. Sounds like a great book.
We don’t know anyone personally with a guide dog. But we do know a blind man pretty well. He could actually benefit from a guide dog. This looks like a great book for kids and adults alike. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. If your friend is interested in a giide dog, I will be happy to talk to him at any time. Also, he may go to http://www.guidingeyes.org

sounds like a great book. we have a friend that uses a guide dog. most behaved dog i have ever seen.
What a wonderful subject for a book. I have never seen a book about service dogs and think it is brilliant.
I believe that this book could be very helpful for someone who has a neighbor or friend that has a guard dog. I think education is key and the more we educate about service dogs the better off we will be.
