My Dad and I have had a dream of opening a business together for years. I’ve always thought that in all likelihood we would never be able to make it happen. One of the biggest reasons for that is because of the expenses involved in start ups. I never honestly took the time to look into funding, which I should have. For example, until I saw this History of the SBA infographic, I didn’t know that the SBA offered loans, I thought that was pretty much a bank thing.

Perhaps it’s time to actually investigate the possibility of making a dream come true. Do you know anyone that has successfully started a small business? What kind of business was it>

  1. My husband is a contractor here in California. He has had no contract work in the past two years. He has been working for a rental company fixing up foreclosures to make over into rentals, but he was just laid off from that last week.

    1. Just looking at the bottom graphics again. I notice that in the “Yearly Opening and Closing of Businesses,” they do not show 2010, but in the bottom graphic they do. I bet that the business “births” is much lower, the business “closures” are much higher, and the “bankruptcies” are much higher for 2010.
Val, also a little hint on getting a small business loan. You should go in yourself and do it. My husband tried for a long time to get a SBL, and was finally told by a woman that he would never qualify. Why? Because he is a white male. That is exactly what she told him.

  2. The economy is bad no matter what politicians claim. Look food shopping carts–staples mosrtly and people in stores/malls walking through with no bags or small ones only in their hands.
