Aveeno has been #ExposingEczema – October is Eczema Awareness Month
October is Eczema Awareness Month. The National Eczema Association has asked me to help the eczema community, by raising my hands and voice in support of the over 30 million Americans suffering in silence. Therefore, I’d like to let all of you know that:

Eczema is so much more than “just a rash.” Eczema is a significant burden on the lives of many who are affected, and deserves to be recognized as a serious disease. We are encouraging people to stand up, be heard and raise a hand of support to change the way people think about eczema.

My husband is a fair skinned red head who has suffered from eczema all his life – even as a baby. I have seen first hand just how much hardship that this disease causes. Besides the burning, itching and physical pain, it also takes an emotional toll on its victims. Unfortunately, they often feel like they must hide their condition. Always wearing long sleeves and pants, even in the hottest weather. So many people do not understand the disease, and believe it to be contagious, which it IS NOT!
Eczema is not contagious.
Eczema is a medical condition which causes skin to become irritated and inflamed. The most common type of eczema is called atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. Eczema is a general term for any type of dermatitis or itchy rash. It affects 10% of all infants.
Unfortunately, my husband did not outgrow it and he suffers horribly from hay fever. Repeated serious flare ups have even left scars on his arms and legs. I thought it was rough patches of skin. I didn’t realize they constantly each. You feel for the kids that itch all the time and hurt.
That itching can cause bleeding and patches once healed reopen with scratching–a cycle that seems endless.
Some people with eczema have worse breakouts when they are stressed.
I learned that there are several different types of Eczema which I didn’t know. I have three grandchildren that have it and one that gets it so bad that he sometimes bleeds.
I found out that eczema is related to allergies like hay fever.
I learned they have a cream for dark spots, I didn’t know that.
I learned that the word “eczema” is derived from a Greek word meaning “to boil over”, which is a good description for the red, inflamed, itchy patches that occur during flare-ups of the disease.
I learned that there are multiple types of Eczema.
I learned that certain foods can cause eczema flair ups.
Eczema symptoms often become less severe as children grow into adults
I learned that food allergies can be associated with eczema, such as dairy products and eggs.
I learned that many children with eczema (up to 80%) will develop hay fever and/or asthma. :/
