Whether you have insurance or not, going to the doctors is just never as simple as going to the doctor’s office and being seen. There’s that pesky scheduling problem. You know the one I mean. The doctor might not be in that day. The doctor might have shortened office hours that day. The doctor might be booked all day and there isn’t an opening for you. I understand why these things happen but I think in most cases, when we want to see the doctor we just want to see the doctor as soon as we can. Moments like these are ideal for using Amwell Online Medical Care.

I haven’t been feeling 100% lately. I am just exhausted. I am guessing that a big part of the reason for this is that my iron is low. I have been diagnosed with anemia in the past, it started after my hysterectomy. A while back the doctor suggested that I take over the counter iron. I’ve tried it and just can’t do it, it makes me feel sick. I’ve been wanting to discuss it with my doctor again, but it takes me two months to get in to see him. Really struggling this weekend, I decided to speak with an online physician with Amwell about this to see if they might have some suggestions.

I found the process of signing up and using Amwell to be extremely easy. I did everything right on our iPad.  Amwell doctor visits are now available in 46 states.

Amwell is accepted by many major insurers, with more added every day. If you don’t have health insurance you just check no insurance and enter your credit card information. An in-office visit with a physician costs, on average, $82 for first-time patients according to the Healthcare Blue Book. Amwell offers a $49 physician visit – a savings of $33. This makes it a great option for everyone, including students in college looking for cost-effective healthcare and those between jobs and without insurance.

Next you choose the type of physician you’d like to speak with at that moment. I chose Medical.

At this point you see a list of the different physicians that are available at that time. One thing that I really liked is that you are able to see some background information about the physicians before you choose one. I chose Dr. Michael Gray (no relation to me or my family), a family physician with an impressive bio that had 20 years of experience.

You’ll also need to provide details on why you’d like to speak with the physician.

Of course the physician will need to know as much as possible in order to help you best, as is the case with any physician, so you’ll also need to provide some information about your medical history.

Then it’s time to see the doctor. One of the things I dislike the most about going to the doctors is the wait. There was one doctor that I used to see where it was common to have a 1-2 hour wait to see the doctor. In my mind, barring emergency, that is just unacceptable. There is a minimal wait to speak to an Amwell physician. Minimal meaning a couple of minutes while the doctor reviews any information that you provided that’s needed. While you wait you will see health facts. I saw two facts and then it was time to speak with the doctor. It didn’t take long at all.

I had a 10-minute session with the doctor. That’s as much as many doctors in our area give, in my experience. I felt comfortable speaking with the doctor, and it didn’t feel awkward as I’d been afraid it might.
At the end of my visit the doctor said that at this point in time he wasn’t able to prescribe anything for me. He discussed some of the common causes for anemia with me. He also said that unfortunately the illness I experience when I take over the counter iron is very common, and that there were no alternative forms of it that he knew of that I could take instead. He did give some details on what type of specialist he would recommend that I see next.

After the visit with the doctor concluded I was shown a brief summary. I saw what the charges were. I was also given the option of having a summary of the visit emailed to me, which I chose. I was also able to rate the experience, which makes the system really work for others because they can decide what doctors to see based upon the ratings of real people.
I want to mention that Amwell isn’t something you would use in the case of an emergency. But, it is something that you can use in conjunction with any doctors you are currently seeing in your own area. Amwell would be ideal for minor illnesses, prescription refills, and those little nagging things that you wonder if you should ignore or see a doctor about. I wish I’d known about Amwell a couple of weeks ago, it would have been perfect when I ran out of my thyroid medication and couldn’t get in to see my local doctor quickly. If you’ve ever been traveling and not felt well you know it’s not fun. Amwell is perfect for people on vacation as well as folks that travel often, as you can speak with the doctor from wherever you are instead of waiting until you get back home.

Amwell brings healthcare home, so that you and your family can feel better, faster.  You can see a doctor anytime on your computer, mobile phone or tablet. Amwell’s 24/7/365 availability means there is no need to drive if you’re not feeling up to it, there’s no need to load the famiy in the car, and there’s no need to find a ride if you don’t drive. It may be the most “pain-free” doctor’s appointment that you’ve ever made, considering the convenience, ease of use and minimal waiting time.

  1. From the map, i gather that Jersey is one of the few states where these doctors cannot prescribe–a problem that might require a trip to another doctor if rx’s are necessary and further costs beyond the actual medicine(s).

  2. I never heard of Amwell before but it sure is a wonderful idea It also will save me lots of time and it is a personalized attention. I have to check it out 🙂

  3. My employer is partnering with a company like this (I’m not sure if it’s Amwell?) and I think it’s going to be so helpful. Visits to the doctor in the winter for a minor illness can be such a hassle!

  4. This sounds like an awesome service. I would definitely consider using this if I couldn’t get out of the house to see my real doctor for some reason.

  5. I am curious as to how well this would work. I have been going to doctors for over a year for an issue that has been misdiagnosed over and over. I would be afraid it would be harder to diagnose if you are not in the same room as the doctor.

  6. As a mom to a child with a rare genetic disorder and having a rare genetic disorder myself and having three step teens who have a bleeding disorder. I am sure this service is going to come in handy someday. I am book marking it. Thank you for sharing.

  7. That is super convenient. Google is too stressful so it would be nice to consult with a real doctor when I can’t physically get to mine.

  8. The only thing I don’t like about going to doctor’s clinics is the long, long wait. I sit in the waiting area for hours only to be called in and speak with a doctor for 10 minutes. This is a great service to have, specially when you feel you can’t drive down to the clinic or the hospital.

  9. This is such a great idea. I don’t always have tons of time to go sit in a waiting room with my kiddos for sometimes an hour or more to be seen for 5 mins!

  10. This is such a great idea. It looks really reliable and I like that you can still speak with a doctor face to face. Feels like we are really living in the future!

  11. This is an amazing idea. Sometimes i am to sick to go to the Doctors office and have to wait for hours to get in.

  12. I really like this idea. I have had so many instances where I could use this instead of trying to find a doctor after hours. This is such a great service.

  13. I’ve used Amwell before and I loved it! Being able to have a cold treated at home and not have to go out is awesome!

  14. Amwell sounds like a great service to use when you need an urgent help where you don’t have a choice to meet a doctor in person & the service could be so handy as well for someone like me who hates visiting doctor quite often.

  15. I think it’s’ an awesome alternative to having to go face-to-face for SO many reasons/things. I have tried it, and I will use it again if the need arises.
