I attended the 2016 NAIAS as a guest of Ford. I have not received any compensation for this post. Please note that, as always, any personal opinions reflected in this post are my own.

Vehicles bring back a lot of memories. I remember when my Mom drove a brown Lincoln Continental. It was the most luxurious car I’d ever been in. Not only was the car elegant, it was spacious. The back seat fit a lot of people and /or things, and the trunk was enormous. They stopped making the Continental in 2002. My Mom bought an LS, the model that was to replace the Continental. It was a really nice car but to me it was a great departure from the Continental. To me what the new model gained in sporty appearance and performance it lost in the spaciousness and elegance that the Continental had possessed. This past week, at the 2016 NAIAS,Lincoln announced that it is bringing back an elegant, luxury car with the return of the flagship Lincoln Continental in 2017.
The 2017 Lincoln Continental is a full-sized luxury sedan. During the unveiling, Lincoln Motor Company President Kumar Galhotra stated that the new 2017 Continental was designed to represent the performance and quiet luxury that the Lincoln brand has always stood for. Folks purchasing the Continental will be pleased to learn that they will receive the personalized experience that comes with the purchase of other Lincoln models.

The owner of the 2017 Continental will appreciate the feeling of luxury before they even get into the car. The vehicle can be started, stopped, locked and unlocked using the mobile app. As you open the door to the car, the seat will deflate enough to make it easier for you to get in. Warm, ambient lighting will reveal soft, leather seats and a natural wood finish. You’ll be able to enjoy the sunlight (or moonlight) streaming through the sunroof from the comfort of your perfect position driver’s seat, which allows the driver to customize the fit and support for their legs.

People in the front seats aren’t the only ones that will be comfortable. Passengers in the back seat will appreciate seats that have heating and cooling, and can recline. They will have access to their own audio and climate controls, and even a rear sunshade.
Everyone in the cabin will appreciate the Rebel sound system, which has various listening modes and is designed to feel like a private ampitheater. The use of tech continues with SYNC 3, which allows you to connect your phone to the car.
A push-button start will bring the available Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter GTDI V6 engine to life, offering a projected 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque for easy and smooth acceleration. Performance was not the only area given considerable attention to during design. Safety is of course a top concern. The 2017 Continental has a 360 degree camera that provides a 7 foot view around the vehicle. Enhanced park assist helps the driver get into tight spaces when attempting to parallel park. The vehicle also has a pedestrian detection system that will alert the driver in order to avoid a collision with a pedestrian. It also works to avoid collisions with other vehicles and can stop the vehicle if you don’t react in time. The lane keeping system makes you that are safely in your lane, and will alert you if the vehicle drifts off course. Adaptive cruise control will help you remain a safe distance from the car in front of you and can even anticipate changes in traffic speed.
I haven’t had an opportunity to drive the 2017 Lincoln Continental, but do hope to do so at some point in the future. From the short time I had seeing it up close on the auto show floor I can say that it’s a very elegant vehicle that for me brings back memories of luxurious comfort.
Here’s a brief video (under 4 minutes) containing the press conference with Mark Fields at NAIAS introducting the all-new Lincoln Continental that occured at NAIAS.

My grandparents always had one and traded it in every other year for a new one. I never knew why they didn’t try a different kind of car. Now that I’m grown up, I get it. 😉 Hurrah for the return of the Continental.
