We’ve had white walls, or off-white walls, for forever. Well, at least it seems like it’s been forever. My husband was a commercial painter for over ten years. White and off-white were the colors he got at a good price, so they’re what we used. When PPG Pittsburgh Paints offered me the opportunity to participate in The Voice of Color Refresh Your Space challenge, I was thrilled to accept.

Each year, color experts from The Voice of Color identify key trend colors for the PPG Pittsburgh Paints brand, and present them in signature five-color palette cards that offer color opportunities for all design elements in a space. This year’s Color Minded trends – Everyday Hero, Elusion, Artful Expression, Discreet Luxury and Modern is Tech – are made up of 25 lively colors that encompass homeowners’ comfort with bold, dynamic hues. The challenge was for me to chose one room in my home to paint with a new Voice of Color trends color.
Both our living room and kitchen desperately needed new paint. The white had become off-white and the off-white had become almost beige due to age and dust and dirt. I couldn’t wait to see what putting some color in the living room or kitchen would do. Our living room is enormous and would have required a lot more paint, so we decided to do the kitchen. We’d already started doing some work in there anyway, so I saw no point in starting another project when there were others unfinished.
Our kitchen was an off-white. our cabinets are dark wood. Our kitchen table is a pub table made of granite with browns and black. The pub chairs are black with beige cushions. We’re planning on redoing the countertop, backspash and floor as finances permit. I wanted to paint the kitchen a color that would go with everything. White or off-white. HAHAHAHAHA! I looked at the paint color samples that I had received and finally decided I wanted to try a color that I don’t even know how to properly describe. It’s called Copper Kettle, and it’s in the Artful Expression trend. To me it’s in the brown family although it leans heavily towards orange or salmon. FYI, I’m not a big fan of the color orange or the color salmon.
I went to Fleck’s Paint Spot for my paint. They’re only a few miles away, which was also about how far I was away from my comfort zone hen it comes to color. But, I promised myself earlier this year I was going to be bolder and work to get out of my comfort zone more often. And so there I was. When I entered the store I was astounded at how many colors of paint there were. I had not seen anything like this in the local home improvement stores and certainly not in the local department stores.
I asked them how true the colors were in comparison to the paint color samples. I was trying to avoid getting a color expecting it to be one thing and getting it home to find it was ten shades lighter or darker. The girl in the store made a small batch so that I could check it out for myself. I was really surprised to see how close the real paint was to the color on the paint color sample. She encouraged me to take it home and put on the wall, just to be sure, which I did. Hubby agreed with me that it seemed like it was a good choice. I returned to Fleck’s the next day and picked up our paint. While I was gone, hubby started emptying the kitchen. By the time I returned, he was taping off the trim.
He then put a dropcloth over our granite pub table and the freezer.
Hubby started getting the paint ready, making sure everything was stirred well.
I’m generally not allowed to paint, because, well, because I don’t do it very well. But I was curious and he was taking forever so I just grabbed a brush and quickly put some on the wall.
I bet you can see why he doesn’t like me to paint, can’t you? You may also have noticed the ugly green hat our kitchen used to be, about 19 years ago when we moved in. Hubby caught on within seconds and asked me to please back away from the paint and keep my hands in the air. Looking at the wall I knew this was one battle I would not win, so I handed over the brush and let hubby take over from there.
We’d agreed that we were going to do both sections of wall. Our kitchen is small. We wanted to be sure the color was really going to pop and go with the table which is in a corner. So, instead of doing one accent wall we did two. As he finished the corner you could really see the difference.
Before long, hubby was finished.
And a slightly better view of how well the Copper Kettle color works in this space.
And here I am in my official shirt. Don’t even ask.
We are completely thrilled with the Copper Kettle color and PPG Pittsburgh Paints. We both liked the color far more than we thought we would. In fact, we liked it so much that we took the leftover paint and did an accent wall in the hall with it. Hubby was very happy that the paint itself was of good quality. He found it easy to work with, and it covered very well.
