Does your writing need help? Do you use too many run ons? Are your sentences made up of just fragments? Do you overuse commas? My Mom, a retired English teacher) says I do. You don’t have to be in school to be concerned about good grammar. Grammar has the power to affect our professional success and personal relationships. My Dad once wrote my Mom a love letter. She corrected it in red ink and gave it back. He never wrote her a love letter again. There’s a no win situation. Marian Anders, a college English professor, felt that many people don’t understand correct grammar and that there needed to be an easier way to learn the basics. As a result, she authored My Dog Bites The English Teacher – Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy.
From the publisher – This book is for people who want to improve their writing. Clear explanations and step-by-step directions show how to find and fix mistakes in writing such as fragments, commas, and others. Stick with the basics in the first five chapters, or read to the end and learn the intricacies of traditional grammar. This book shows writers how to identify and fix fragments, comma splices, run-ons, commas, apostrophes, and other common mistakes using a logical, step-by-step method that always works.
I found the book to be a fun and easy read. Her writing style is friendly. There’s no super technical jargon to confuse, it’s all explained in easy to understand wording with examples. There are exercises to practice scattered throughout the book to help you measure your progress. I particularly liked the chapter on case and agreement. It would make a terrific desk reference for anyone, especially students starting to write term papers. It would also be a great book for anyone rejoining the workplace or folks wanting to improve their writing skills. At under $15.00 this book is a great gift idea as well.
