About a third of my son’s DVD collection is made up of NCircle titles. He’s happy because he likes the characters. I’m happy because I know that the titles are safe for him to watch. Recently I was offered the opportunity to check out their newest title – The Gruffalo.

ABOUT THE GRUFFALO
Based on the best-selling children’s book, The Gruffalo is a magical tale of a mouse who takes a stroll through the woods. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him, the adorable and confident mouse has to use his wits to survive. He tells his predators that he is meeting a monster, which scares each of them, but what will mouse do when comes face to face with the terrible product of his imagination?
MY THOUGHTS
I had not heard the story of The Gruffalo prior to watching this DVD. The Gruffalo was a 2010 Academy Award nominee, and it’s easy to see why. Helena Bonham Carter gives a voice to a mother squirrel telling her two young children the story of a mouse that encounters three enemies that want to eat him while walking through the woods. When he encounters these enemies – a fox, an owl and a snake – he envisions what they are going to do to him and uses his head to get away by stating he’s there to meet a creature called The Gruffalo. When he describes The Gruffalo to each of his enemies and tells them what The Gruffalo’s favorite food is, they let him go. The three enemies meet up and realize that they’ve each been given different descriptions about The Gruffalo, which makes them realize they’ve been tricked. At that point the mouse encounters The Gruffalo, a creature whose appearance is a combination of the three descriptions he gave to his enemies. To escape being eaten by The Gruffalo, he tells The Gruffalo that he’s the scariest creature in the woods and sets out to prove it. I can’t tell you the end but I can tell you that I wasn’t sure who was going to eat what for lunch until the very end. The colors and animation were great, and the story quite amusing. We both enjoyed this DVD and I recommend it highly.
