This is a quiet, gentle book made especially for children going to school for the first time. The artwork is beautiful and the story shows Ming learning new things at school, yearning to be old enough or big enough to slide down the “big” red slide and as the seasons change, Ming changes too. She doesn’t even realize it until the end of the school year when she realizes all she has learned and how she has grown! I read this to my little buddy, Joshua, who is 5 and going to Kindergarden in the fall. He really enjoyed the story and loved the pictures! He took his time discovering everything in each illustration, and rejoiced with Ming when she finished her first year of school.

This was another truly lovely book with a heart warming story. Lilla’s daddy is going away (he is a soldier). Lilla and her Dad, whom she calls, “Papa,” spend a lot of time together in Lilla’s sunflower patch. When Papa leaves, Lilla gives him a sunflower seed to remember her by. As the seasons change and time goes on, Lilla feels more sad. Finally, her Papa comes home! That summer, Lilla receives many letters and cards with photos of other military families from all over in front of sunflowers. It turns out that Papa grew his sunflower overseas and shared the seeds with all of his friends to brighten their lives, too. I loved this story so much that I gave the book to my grand daughter, Beatrice, for her first birthday. She loved looking at the pictures and one day she will enjoy the story, too!

I loved reading and picking what I wanted to read from the time I had my own library card and could visit the library almost daily on the way home from school.
