Mom Knows It All 2015 Holiday Gift Guide DIY Girls Creative Electronics Kit
Education is so important. I have always believed that education can be fun, and that kids want to learn more when they have an interest in the topic and are having fun. When asked how she got an interest in teaching many years ago, my Mom will reply that teaching and being a secretary were the only two acceptable jobs for women at the time. I am so glad that is no longer the case. Women in good jobs in important fields are breaking through the glass ceiling. And we know now that it’s more important than ever to start encouraging our children to explore interests while they’re young. The DIY Girls Creative Electronics Kit does just that.

DIY Girls is a STEM nonprofit serving low-income girls in Los Angeles. It’s founder, an MIT-trained electrical engineer, has created a kit based on the DIY Girls’ favorite projects.
It is no exaggeration that we are asked on a daily basis how to attract girls to STEM projects and activities. We are technical women and are passionate about sharing our expertise and providing mentoring opportunities to girls whenever possible. In order for us to empower and reach as many girls as possible, we have partnered with DIY Girls to provide our first kit that is designed by girls, for girls. We know that these hands-on projects are a great way to get started in electronics in a fun and engaging way that will appeal to the young and aspiring female engineer in your life. The projects include simple instructions so they can be done at home, at grandma’s, at a friend’s house or in a classroom setting.
Proceeds from the $49.99 kit go towards the organization’s programs serving underserved girls. They are planning on releasing a facilitator’s guide soon so that formal and informal educators can facilitate the projects with groups of girls.
The DIY Girls Creative Electronics Kit contains 3 projects that young girls (ages 6+) can make including:

  1. Paper Circuits Pop-up Card or Notebook Hacking
  2. DIY Robot
  3. Light-up Tutu

Projects provide girls with a hands-on introduction to basic electronics, robotics and e-textiles (fashion tech) . The kit comes with instruction cards that make it easy for any girl to get started with making.

  1. Born in a world only beginning to emerge from a man’s one, my dream of becoming an attorney was quickly and effectively dashed by my father who advised that judges of the day favored men.

  2. I use to love watching my older brother tool around with this kind of thing. I sure wish they had it when I was younger.
