Eyeliner: Should You Choose Pencil, Liquid Or Powder?

Eyeliner is one of my two must-haves. As much as I like it though, I am not particularly adept at getting it to look quite as “professional” as some. It’s just not my strong suit. I use black or brown/black, and just line near the lashes of my lower lid. End of story. It’s pretty plain. So, when I received some application tips that I could share with my readers, I gladly said yes.

First let us start by saying that whether to wear eyeliner or not is a personal choice. There are a lot of ways to make up your eyes, and this is just one of them. What this particular one is useful for, is defining your eyes and make them appear bigger, adjust their shape. Just remember to always wear mascara with eyeliner, so your eyelashes look good. You can also opt for a well blended eyeshadow to achieve an amazing effect. We will discuss application a bit later on, and now let’s focus on the types.
The Pencil:
The pencil, while a convenient option, must be sharpened a lot, which is not easy task and a bit tricky as well. What’s more, it will tend to smear. So, if not maintained throughout the day, this can make it look sloppy, messy and, of course, not very attractive. Keep in mind, though, that pencil is usually much less expensive than liquid eyeliner, although it depends on which brand you decide to purchase.
The Powder:
There really are not any cons to using powder eyeliner so to speak. There is no sharpening involved first of all, and you have more control. It will also generally not smear like a pencil might. So, the powder may be a better choice for you. Again, keep in mind that powder may be a little more expensive, although you can cope with that if you use an Overstock 15% off coupon, which is sure to save you some precious money on your cosmetics shopping.
The Liquid:
This eyeliner is usually the most expensive, although you can use coupons, usually available both online and in stores. Although liquid and gel eyeliners cost much more than pencil or powder, the look you get is clean and sharp, making those eyes of yours really pop! And you get excellent control as well. What’s more, they are almost always waterproof. Thus, in spite of the price difference as opposed the other options available, you get great value for your money.
Application:
When using a pencil make sure that it’s nice and sharp so you get a clean line. Then, follow the eyelid along the lash line and carefully draw a line from the inner to the outer corner of your eyelid. Make sure not to get too close to the tear duct, as you don’t want to block it – it will just cause you eye problems in the long run.
Make a solid straight line, but try not to overdo it with too thick a smudge, or going too far toward the edges of the lid. Otherwise, it might appear as if you have glasses on, which can be very unflattering. A nice thin straight line should give you the best results.
As far as the powder goes, you should use a very fine brush. Remember to moisten the powder and carefully apply it on the lid – the process is the same as with the pencil. Powder used in this way gives a much better look and it will not smear. You can also use eyeshadow as an eyeliner, moistening it and using a fine brush to apply it.
Liquid and gel eyeliner costs a bit more, but the results can really be spectacular! Even when you use the same application process as with the pencil and powder you get a much cleaner, sharper line that will not smear and define your eyes beautifully.
As far as the color goes, you can get pretty much everything, although most of them will be black, brown or gray. Just remember to check and make sure there are no clumps or drips. It’s time to have fun with your eye make up and look your best!
