This post is brought to you by Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen.

May is Melanoma awareness month. I spent hours in the sun daily for years when I was younger. I never gave skin cancer a thought. I stopped working outside long before skin cancer became the high profile problem that it is today. I figured I was safe, since I hadn’t had exposure to the sun in years. I was lucky. That’s not the case with everyone. You don’t even need to spend time in the sun to get skin cancer. My Mom was diagnosed with it several years ago. My Mom has never been into sun bathing. So, it’s one of those things that noone is safe from. Which makes it one of those things that we must work hard to protect ourselves from. Sunscreen is key here.
Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen was originally created in Australia, where sunscreen standards are the strictest in the world. While it is now made here in the U.S. by Crown Laboratories in Johnson City, TN, it is still held to Australian standards. Dermatologists and parents alike are quick to recommend this pharmaceutical-grade sunscreen, which is made with the highest quality ingredients that is ranked as one of the top sunscreens by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Blue Lizard Sunscreen comes in five different formulas – Baby, Sensitive, Face, Sport & Regular. All formulations have an SPF of 30+ and contain at least 6% Zinc Oxide. All five formulas provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage and help prevent skin cancer and sunburn. And there’s more! Baby & Sensitive are paraben-free, chemical-free and fragrance-free. On top of not having those, Face is also oil-free.
I never realized there was a right way and a wrong way to apply sunscreen. Did you?
The first step is knowing when to put sunscreen on. The peak hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. While it’s important to wear sunscreen any time you are in the sun, it’s especially crucial during peak hours. Blue Lizard should be applied to dry skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and/or water activities and reapplied at least every two hours to ensure SPF protection is maintained. The next step is the actual how. Most adults need 1 oz. of sunscreen to cover their body. One ounce is the size of a shot glass. Apply to entire body, thoroughly rubbing it in, 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun and make sure you don’t forget your ears, face and tops of your feet. Reapply every two hours or sooner if in and out of water or excessive sweating occurs. Make sure to cover all exposed areas including your scalp and ears. In addition to wearing sunscreen it is advisable to wear sun protective clothing such as a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
Wondering how Blue Lizard holds up in and around water? Well, that’s an interesting topic.
Did you know that claims that a sunscreen is “waterproof,” “sweatproof” or provides “all-day protection” are forbidden by FDA regulations? I didn’t! Regular and Sport provide 80 minutes of water-resistant protection based on the FDA testing method. This is the maximum allowed claim by the FDA. Blue Lizard Regular/Sport has also been found to meet the more rigorous Australian test method for water resistance at 240 minutes. Baby, Sensitive and Face do not claim water-resistant protection.
Why do I think it’s important to understand how to properly apple sunscreen? The facts (courtesy Skin Cancer Foundation) speak for themselves.
Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. Each year in the US, nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that at present, more than 135,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. In 2015, an estimated 73,870 of these will be invasive melanomas, with about 42,670 in males and 31,200 in women. If melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal.

Blue Lizard’s patented PBA-free Smart Bottle™ changes color from white to blue (or pink for Baby formula) when it is exposed to harmful UV rays. This is a great way to remind you to put on sunscreen. The packaging is designed that way to be useful, and because Blue Lizard really wants consumers to know and understand the dangers of skin cancer, as well as steps to take to prevent it. To that end they pride themselves on being transparent about their products, listing every ingredient (and why it’s used) and providing the best resources to help consumers understand what makes an effective sunscreen.

You better believe I later on the SPF every day. Especially now that cancer has hit close to home.
I’ll have to give Blue Lizard a try. We live in Georgia, so the sun is generally a blazing heat ray. I burn really easily, too.
I rarely use sunscreen on myself, but I ALWAYS use it for my boys. I like to rock a tan in the summer time 😉
I always have to cover up with this stuff before we eat outside. I get burned so easy, even when I’m tan!
I’ve never tried these products before, but I’d definitely want to. I would love to try the sensitive ones. My skin is very sensitive and my youngest daughter has eczema, so that would probably work best for the both of us.
I have a family member who is dealing with skin cancer because he doesn’t properly take care of his skin and he lives outside almost all the time. This is valuable information.
Skin cancer is so scary! People don’t realize that it can take a while. Just because you don’t have a mole or spot now, one might show up later.
Cover up and sunblock is a must for my family. Skin health is so important.
I never go out without sunscreen. I would love to win. Thanks!!! 😀
I love that the bottles change colour when it’s time to put on sunscreen! What an innovative idea! I would buy the sunscreen just for that feature 🙂
The baby sunscreen.
I have just learned the importance of wearing sunscreen every day. Even when we stay indoors, we still have the risk of being exposed to the harmful rays of the sun.
I have always had my kids wear sunscreen. As they are both lighter skin than me. My daughter does not tan but burns. Sunscreen is very important for kids.
I dont do sunscreen usually, depending on where I am and what I’m wearing but I make sure to make sure my kiddos are fully covered. I haven’t ever heard of this brand, I’ll check it out!
It’s so important to protect your skin from the sun. I use moisturisers and makeup with built in SPF because skin cancer is such a big problem here at the moment.
I would use the sunscreen for my face. I always like to use sunscreen specially formulated for the face. I like how the bottle changes colors when exposed to harmful rays.
I would live the sport, it’s more resistant to moisture and we are always doing some sort of physical activity outside.
My grandfather developed skin cancer many years ago and thankfully make it through. He was a farmer out in the sun for long hours and in those days sunscreen wasn’t something people focused on using for protection. I’m glad so much awareness is being brought to this.
Skin cancer is nothing to take lightly, yet I see so many people basking out in the sun. I was just furious with my 31-year-old daughter who went on a weekend retreat in Miami recently and allowed herself to get really burnt. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen … what’s so difficult about that to remember?!
This is my first time ever hearing of Blue Lizard Sunscreen! I absolutely love how the cap changes colors when it’s exposed to UV rays!
I’m so going to try the Sport and Face sunscreen
I have not tried Blue Lizard sunscreen yet. I will have to pick some up for my family to try. Sunscreen is so important.
I’m a runner with fair skin and a family history of skin cancer so sun protection is a top priority for me. I would use the sport formula for runs.
I haven’t seen this yet in the stores. We always have a collection of sunscreens since we are in Florida!
I need to look for this brand to try. Applying sunscreen is so important for kids and adults. I remember suffering through a bad sunburn as a child and it was horrible.
I would find the Sport sunscreen most helpful – we play basketball for exercise in the summertime and go through a lot of it.
I would love the facial blue lizard.
Regular is perfect. Sunscreen is a requirement, and I carry it with me all day, too, for refreshing applications.
I’m thinking the sport one would be best for my household. I think that variety tends to work best for me specifically, as I do tend to get sweaty when I’m outside in the sun. Though the face one sounds interesting, but I always worry about it making my face really greasy and gross feeling.
Sport would be perfect since I work outdoors.
Sounds like something I should pack for tropical trips.
My family would benefit from the Sensitive Blue Lizard since our skin is very sensitive.
I think the sport formula would be most useful.
I would like the sport. We do a lot of swimming and camping in the summer.
I prefer the sport because I am outside a lot for work.
I am mostly interested in using the blue-lizard sun screen for the face. I always get burned on the face every year it seems.
I would love to try the face sunscreen.
My family uses both the sensitive (for me) and the Sport for my son….it’s great stuff, really works!
These sounds like amazing sunscreen products indeed. It is so important now days to protect our skin from the sun. I don’t know my kids used to burn so easy and they both had sensitive skin when they were little years ago. Thanks for sharing and this is an awesome giveaway along with an amazing coupon.
The baby sunscreen would be perfect for our little guy. We spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer months.
Looks like a great sunscreen brand, I really need it too; my skin burns so easily! I hate sun burns as well, I have had some really bad ones that hurt very badly.
At this time I think the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sport would be perfect for my family.
The Sport sunscreen would be perfect for my family!
I have varying degrees of skin types in my home. My oldest grandson was blessed with a small amount of Seminole Indian in his blood so his skin isn’t real sensitive and he rarely ever burn, but he’s the one who ends up with the most beautiful tan at the end of summer. To protect him from the ray’s damage in general, he would be good with the regular. My other two grandsons have very sensitive skin, almost baby like and it reacts to everything it comes in contact with, and usually in a negative way so they both would do well with the sunscreen for sensitive skin. I have fragile baby like skin that burns so easy and I wouldn’t hesitate to use a sunscreen made specifically for baby skin.
The blue lizard sport would be perfect with my family
We have a pool in our backyard so we spend all summer out there. I pretty much buy sunscreen in bulk! I will have to try this brand.
We’d get the regular kind! Both hubby and I and the kids would use it!
The face sunscreen would be most useful for me, for daily use.
Growing up, I was never really concerned with using sunscreen. Now I am so adamant, it’s so important! I have to check these out!
Would love to try the face one.
Also the sensitive. I am curious how this sunscreen will work as I tend to break out in an itchy rash if I’m outside by the 2nd day in sun.
This sounds cool, I’ll have to check out this sunscreen!
The sensitive would be great to try on my red headed toddler and for my older kids, really put it through it’s paces on our June Disney wacation for a week! 😉 Thanks!!
Regular or sensitive formulas we use the most. Always wear sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses especially for the kids. Wish we knew the dangers of burning when we were growing up. Several incidents of Sun poisoning and 2nd degree burns.
The sensitive one would work best for my family.. My daughters and I have really sensitive skin.
My kids love the sprinklers and pool, so Blue Lizard Sport is best for me!
We would want the Sport version for our household! This hot Southern heat in Southern Middle TN can be brutal! Plus we spend the majority of our summer on a ball field or in the garden so it wears off quick as we’re moving and sweating!
I would have most use for the one for the face.
I would love the face sunscreen
The sport would be great for us with all the days out in the pool
I would say the sport or sensitive would be good. I have a wide variety of ages in my household. Some have sensitive skin more then others. Some play harder then others. Thank you for the chance.
We need the Sport version!
Probably the face sunscreen for me to push back any wrinkles 😉 And the sensitive for my grandson since he is fair-skinned. Thank you!
The sports sun lotion. My kids are always out running around.
We like to be nice and active in the summer, so the Sport would be perfect for my family!
I would love to try the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sensitive 8.75 oz Bottle the most
