I wore braces for most of my four years in high school. I hated every moment of it. Fast forward over thirty years and I’m visiting the dentist’s office on what seems like an almost regular basis once more. Most recently we discovered that I have a crack and require a crown. How they see that stuff in xrays is still amazing to me. That’s my own xray below, by the way. Anyway, the fitting for the crown has already been done and in two more weeks they’ll be putting it in. Angel learned of this and asked to share her thoughts on dental care for young children. Below is her guest post.

As parents, we want to give our kids every advantage in life. Good nutrition, great schools, a loving home … but there’s one area you might have overlooked where you can give your kids a huge boost that will last their entire lives: their oral health. Straight, white teeth and healthy gums allow kids to eat more easily, speak more clearly, and enjoy better health. They add to a person’s self-confidence throughout life and may even help them in their relationships or careers! You can give this gift to your children by teaching them healthy oral habits like brushing and flossing, ensuring that they go in for regular dental checkups, and looking into options such as Incognito Hidden Braces to align their teeth properly.
A healthy mouth gives your child the gift of a beautiful appearance and increased self-esteem. People will notice when someone has straight and healthy teeth. It can even lead to improved opportunities in life, better relationships, and career advancement. It’s no exaggeration to say that good dental care is incredibly important for your child’s future! But it’s not only their appearance that benefits. Glowing teeth and healthy gums directly affect the health of the rest of the body. Healthy gums help to protect the heart. A healthy mouth that can chew food well helps lessen the chance of digestive disorders. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and less likely to develop cavities, and correcting misaligned teeth may help with head or neck pain for some children. Braces are a wonderful investment in your child’s future.
Braces today are much different than they were twenty or thirty years ago. It used to be that only traditional metal braces were an option for most people. Today, metal braces are smaller, more lightweight, and faster than ever before at moving teeth. If your kids don’t like the idea of visible metal in their mouths, it’s also possible to wear braces braces made of clear materials that blend with the teeth and are, as a result, less visible to other people. There are also other options such as Invisalign aligners or the innovative Incognito hidden braces, which are braces behind the teeth. These highly effective braces bond to the back of each tooth instead of the front and are completely invisible to other people. These newer, faster, and more aesthetically pleasing options give you all kinds of ways to a healthier, more beautiful smile.
You do so much for your kids. Don’t hesitate to give them the lifelong gift of a beautiful smile and healthy mouth as well! Teach them to floss and to brush two or three times a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Make sure they have regular dental checkups. Insist they avoid staining products, such as coffee or tobacco. And make an appointment with a local orthodontist. There are a number of great NJ orthodontists to talk about your child’s specific corrective treatment needs. Your child will live a healthier, more confident, and more successful life with a mouth full of straight, white teeth.

I should have had braces because I have a cross bite but my dentist during my tweens/teens never suggested it. Whenever I go to a new dentist now they ask why I didn’t get them. I’d never heard of incognito braces before, it sounds like a great option for look-conscious kids or adults who need braces.
My dental care began at two. I always make a point of visiting my dentist at least once yearly. I know my insurance plan and utilize it to the fullest. I invested in each of my kids teeth. Now they are adults with children of their own I hope they see the value of dental care and follow up in their own families. Teeth affect the body, nutrition, state of mind, appearance and more, more, more.
We underestimate the importance of good oral care.
No one in my family has braces. We were blessed with very straight teeth. But I know how important they can be.
Austin wore braces, but no one else has yet. I probably could have used them just a tiny bit when I was younger, but maybe I’ll be one of those 40-year-old Moms who have braces the same time her daughter does 😉
Being a dentist, oral care is so very important!
Had I not given my oldest the gift of braces I know for a fact she would have lower self esteem due to hiding her smile. Her alignment was off and her teeth were crowed very early and now at 15 her smile lights up a room. Great post and I believe it to be true!
Nobody in my family has worn braces, but my son is going to need braces. I just hope I can afford it when he has to get them. There are so many options that weren’t available when I was young. He will have a lot of choices.
These are great tips. A beautiful smile can go such a long way too for self-confidence.
My son is going to need braces. They wanted to put them on him 2 years ago, but I just felt he was too young, and they said he would need to have them again when he was older. So… I’d rather wait and do it once.
both of my kids need braces. this is definitely something to consider.
