Earlier this week I shared two posts containing some of the highlights from interviews with Delivery Man leading lady Cobie Smulders and director Ken Scott. In case you missed those, here’s a little information on the movie Delivery Man.
Delivery Man is the story of affable underachiever David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn), whose mundane life gets twisted in a knot when he finds out that he fathered 533 children via sperm donations he made twenty years earlier. In debt to the mob, rejected by his pregnant girlfriend, things couldn’t look worse for David when he’s hit with a lawsuit from 142 of the 533 twentysomethings who want to know the identity of the donor. As David struggles to decide whether or not he should reveal his true identity, he embarks on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but the father he could become as well.
While on set, we also had the opportunity to interview Vince Vaughn, the main character in the movie. We arrived on set for the early morning call. Early as in 7:30. Filming for that morning was outdoors, right on the street and sidewalk. It was damp and chilly.
We were given headsets and seated just offset with a monitor so we could watch what was filmed. It was fascinating to watch the filming, because you would see it with your own eyes while at the same time see on the monitor how the different cameras would catch the same thing from different angles. It was neat.
That morning, Vince was filming scenes with Cobie Smulders. This one scene they were working on involved the two of them having a conversation while sitting inside a delivery truck. They had to shoot this one a few times in order to get it just right. In between takes, they chatted about the bloggers watching, and decided to serenade us with a version of “Let’s Give Them Something To Talk About”, where they changed the words to “Let’s Give Them Something To Blog About”. It was almost surreal knowing that a song just for our little group was being filmed and recorded and was on the same reels of footage that the whole world will see soon in the theater. I can remember hearing it in my head and even now, nine months later, it still makes me smile.
Before long, we had our chance to speak with Vince. As it turns out, Vince isn’t the biggest fan of having his photo taken, so I don’t have a photo from that morning for you. I can assure you, he looks pretty much the same in person as he does in the movies. And yes, he is very tall.
We started off by chatting about family. Vince and his wife had a two year old. When we discussed where he and his wife gets some of their information, he said they often do research on the internet. He seemed a bit interested in what we did, which was very cool. From there, we dove into discussing Delivery Man.
We asked Vince what his thoughts were on his character, David Wozniak.
VINCE VAUGHN : You know I love the concept, and I think being a new dad, I was really right for it. I think the fun of the movie for me is, when younger, he (David) kind of donates a lot to a sperm bank. As sort of a young guy, he thinks, like, oh I can make a couple bucks. But he doesn’t really think of the consequences at that age. And now all these years later it’s like four to five hundred kids want to meet him. They’ve overused his donations, if you will.
So the concept in itself is funny. But then what became interesting was because of the number of children, they can each play out in different circumstances so I think he gives you all of your hopes and fears as a parent, each kind of kid can represent that. One could be doing something, one could be getting challenged with problems in life. One’s hurting, one’s this, and so to all these different kids going through a unique experience, sort of as a parent I think what you try to daydream about and stay positive about.
Like your fears that your kid would get caught up in this, or have this experience, or would lose your self-esteem, or your hopes would be they would love to do something, or find somebody that they care about, or that they get passionate about things in life and are engaged. So it was a real fun way to find out, I think, in a real tangible way, what all goes through your mind when it comes to your particular child.
Next, we asked Vince his thoughts about being a biological father to children he’d never met, and how he prepared for the role.
VINCE VAUGHN : I have friends who were adopted. Nowadays it’s like, it’s a really powerful choice. So I don’t know that there’s a system for that, people want that or don’t want. I think his story is wow, we’d like to know who this person is. I think it’s a unique situation, so there’s that curiosity.
Q : What kind of research did you do for this?
VINCE VAUGHN : Yeah, you know, I just looked up a lot of stuff and information about things. But I think I really tapped in a lot to what I was going through. You also have all of the wonder and worry about your baby. I think I’ve just really kind of played and acted this role.
Q : What’s the funniest thing that’s happened on set so far?
VINCE VAUGHN : We just more kind of joked a lot and the subject matter has a lot of optimism, it earns that because it goes through some situations that can feel kind of risky or nervous. It’s not all easy. But it definitely deals with some very difficult situations. But I think at its core it’s a very kind of about love and about optimism.
So I think everyone’s in kind of a good mood every night.
Q : How has it been filming in New York?
VINCE VAUGHN : It’s so incredible being here. It’s great because having that many kids who are all involved in different lifestyles and involved in different things, it lends itself well to this.
