ABOUT OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well. “Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth, with screen story by Mitchell Kapner and screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Josh Donen and Philip Steuer are serving as executive producers.
MY THOUGHTS
I received a copy of Oz The Great And Powerful. If you’ve read Mom Knows It All for a while then you probably recall that I attended the Oz The Great And powerful premiere in LA earlier this year. I was captivated by the movie from the moment the opening credits started to appear on the screen. I fell in love with the movie, and it’s one of my all-time favorites. I’ve seen it six times since, and find something new about it each time I watch it. It’s just that kind of movie.
I don’t want to rehash things I’ve said before, in my Oz The Great And Powerful review from 03/08/13. That’s not what this post is about. This post is about the Blu-ray, and why I love it. The Blu-ray has a host of bonus features that weren’t shown in the theater that are amazing.
Bonus features include:
- Disney Second Screen – The Magic Of Oz The Great And Powerful – a detailed and immersive journey into the different lands of Oz including interactive map, story of the cast of characters including what inspired them, Sleight Of Hand: Zach Braff Puppet Theater, and The Sounds of Magical Oz which shares how sound effects in the movie were made
- Bloopers
- Mariah Carey music video
- My Journey In Oz by James Franco – a personal story produced and directed by James Franco, the actor that plays Oz.
- Mr Elfman’s Musical Concoctions – Composer Danny Elfman shares what inspired the score of Oz The Great And Powerful
- China Girl And The Suspension Of Disbelief – the story of how China Girl was animated, and an interview with actress Joey King
- Before Your Very Eyes: From Kansas To Oz – Production designer Robert Stromberg offers an up close look at the sets that make up the land of Oz, and the visual effects used
- Mila’s Metamorphosis – the story of how Mila Kunis makeup as done, which transformed her from the witch Theodora into the green witch.
- Walt Disney And The Road To Oz – the story of how it all started, going all the way back to Walt Disney and his fascination with all things Oz
Oz The Great And Powerful is a must have for your movie collection, no matter if you’re a fan of The Wizard Of Oz or not. It’s an entertaining story that you’ll want to watch again and again.
