Have you by chance seen the new Connecting Flights video yet? The commercial reminded me of some of the funny things that have happened to my family while traveling. My Mom travels a lot. Sometimes it’s tp use her time share and sometimes it’s just to go someplace. Several years ago my family went to Florida. I don’t mean just my family here in my house, I also mean some of my extended family, including my Mom and Dad. These are them.
We were going to be staying in my parents time share in Florida. The thinking was that we could all spend some quality time together and have fun, while saving some money by being in the time share where we could eat, do laundry and feel more at home. Good plan. My Mom packed accordingly. That means that she and Dad packed lighter then light because we’d have a washer and dryer in the timeshare. It also meant she packed she packed appropriate personal items. So we get to the Atlantic City Airport. We’re on time and the morning has been smooth sailing. We are stopped at the security checkpoint, which I jokingly called Checkpoint Charlie. The lines weren’t outlandish so I anticipated getting through and boarding with no problem. I start making my way through and I’m stopped. I was asked to power up my laptop. I couldn’t get it going right away so I try to make chit chat while trying to get the laptop to power up. I ask the guard why I had to power my laptop up and others around me didn’t. He said it was random and that they needed to be sure that my laptop wasn’t actually an incendiary device. Good thing it wasn’t the model of laptop that was known to catch fire, huh? Anyway.I finally got the laptop on and they let me through security. I try to run to catch up to the rest of my family, only to realize they aren’t ahead of me. They’re over there, near another security machine. Everyone but my Mom is there. She wasn’t with them because she’s the one they were waiting for. Why were they waiting and not walking towards the gate? It seems that my Mom had packed for every eventuality, including laundry. My Mom is one of those people that crams as much as possible in when packing. In order to conserve space, she’d put the laundry detergent in a ziploc baggie. What’s the problem there, you ask? The security guard at my Mom’s machine thought she had a bag of drugs. It took her almost 30 minutes to convince the security guards that the white powder was laundry detergent and not illegal drugs.
If you saw a baggie that looked similar to this, what would you think?
Fortunately, in the end I guess they believed her because they let her go, but they confiscated the powder and said that they were going to destroy it. We were the last ones to board the plane. Another five minutes I bet we would have missed the flight.
This is just one of the crazy stories I have from our family travels. If you haven’t seen the Connecting Flights commercial, I suggest you do. It’s got its own crazy travel story, and it cracks me up every time. Here it is.
Bet you didn’t see that refrigerator coming, did you? I sure didn’t. I think this is by far the best Sears commercial I’ve ever seen. And one of my favorite commercials this holiday season.
