Spring has officially sprung. Nice weather is on the way, and has already started to arrive for some. Here in my area of New Jersey we had a relatively mild winter and have already seen bright and sunny days with temperatures of over 60. Yay for spring! It and fall are my two favorite seasons. Here are a few tips and ways you can enjoy the weather and get/stay healthy as a family.
Go outside and expand your natural horizons. One of the things I enjoy the most about the nice weather is the sound of children playing outside. Playing games such as tag, Red Rover and Mother May I will help keep kids interested and moving. Adults can get in on the fun too by adapting a game, a great example being Manhunt which is like playing tag in the evening.
Walking. Go for a family walk. You can do it in your neighborhood or somewhere else. We have a beach overlooking the bay about a half of a mile down the road from my house. There’s a playground there. We’ve been known to take a family walk, stop for a rest at the playground for a while, and then walk back. It’s a nice way to spend time together.
Bicycle riding. Go for a family bike ride. Bicycling as a family can be a little more challenging than you might think but it’s fun. First you all need a bike. We can’t do this now as I don’t have a bike but I hope to be able to get one soon. I used to have one a number of years ago. What makes it challenging is the staying together while remaining safe. That’s why ideally it’s best if you can take your bikes somewhere safe and scenic that’s off the main roads. We have a reservoir in our area, and several parks, all of which are perfect for bike riding.
Gardening. Gardening is a great way to have fun and involve the whole family. Kids love to plant seeds and watch their plants and flowers grow. If you grow your own fruit I bet the kids are more likely to want to eat their vegetables. You can have a fun competition to see whose tomatoes grow the largest or something similar. It will also help to tech the children about gardening and responsibility.
Eating. I think it’s easier to incorporate healthy eating into their lives when the weather is nice. In our house we’re far more likely to grill outside when it’s nice. Plus we also eat outside, which I find to be a slower paced, more relaxing meal than when we eat inside a lot of time.
