Hurricane Irene – Update 2 With Video – The Morning After

The worst of Hurricane Irene passed overnight and during the early hours this morning. This morning at 8:30 am it was raining and a bit windy. It was quiet, except for the sound of the wind. I didn’t see any cars pass by. This is a 13 second video of the rose bush near my front porch, taken today 08/28/11 at 8:30 am.

At about 10:30 am I ventured out. I had to go to my parent’s house up the street to let their dogs out so I decided to make a trip through the neighborhood to see what effects Hurricane Irene had had. It was sprinkling and there wasn’t much wind.
This is the edge of one of the lagoons on my street. It’s about 4 blocks from my house. Here the water had risen but had not come over. You can see the water in the leaves.

This is another of the lagoons on my street. You can see from looking at the water how much the water rose up next to people’s bulkheads.

This is a side street that intersects my street. It’s five blocks from my house. It doesn’t border on water itself and the intersection wasn’t flooded so I think this was just an accumulation of rainwater.

This water accumulation is on my street seven blocks from my house. The water is from the lagoon (behind that fence) rising up and over. I actually drove through this and could feel my truck slowing down. It was deep enough that a car might not make it through it successfully.

This was taken on a side street 8.5 blocks from my house. That is someone’s yard, the water from the bay came right up and over.

This is a side street ten blocks from my house. The bay is just on the other side of that fence.

This side street is twelve blocks from my house. The bay had come across the street and was deep enough that it was halfway up the children’s knees. There is actually an intersection at the stop sign but you can’t see that road at all.
Oh and what parent lets their children play in flooding bay water while under a tornado watch by the way? Can anyone say irresponsible?

This is a street that parallels my own. This is at the complete other end of my neighborhood, thirteen blocks from me. That’s the end portion of the street and just behind that house at the end is the bay.

On my trip through the neighborhood I was looking for trees that had broken. Here’s a tree whose branch broke.

This is the only tree down that I noticed.

This is the pool at my parent’s house, which is one block from me. They had no damage that I could see. The gazebo on the back deck was still standing and didn’t even look ripped. The pool did have a lot of leaves in it but did not seem to have overflowed, that’s about how much water is always in it.
